tuticorin MP, vouching for nellai express to tiruchendur. Mr. Jayadurai, MP, met Mr. M. Kharge in delhi and stressed this demand. Besides, he request to repeal the order of balaji express skipping Thirupathi. And also he sought a direct service between tuty and mumbai.

Source: thinathanthi/today chennai edition.

I still wonder why our MP wants the Nellai express to be extended to Tiruchendur. This is like cooking up issues. I dont think so we would like Pearlcity to be extended to some other city in the same way Nellai residents would not like their dedicated train being extended. Our MP could ask some demands that would help us rather than putting us into trouble.

Some of the valid demands include

1) Tuticorin - Mumbai
2) Tuticorin - Chennai daily overnite express via Arupukottai and Tanjavur
3) Tuticorin - Trivandrum/Kollam daily passenger via Nellai and Nagercoil
4) Tuticorin - Dehradun via New Delhi
5) Tuticorin - Howrah

Leaving out all these, our MP wanted some dedicated train to be extended. Only God should help us

Yes sir,Nellai,Vaigai,Pearlcity,Pandian are all prestigious trains of southern railways. It should be to the place where it meant to be.I too do not support extension of nellai express to tiruchendur. But i would be happy if atleast one or two u mentioned materializes soon.Out of the five i would prioratise Tuticorin-chennai daily overnite and Tuticorin-Delhi.

G K Vasan inaugurates maritime academy

TUTICORIN: Union shipping minister GK Vasan inaugurated the Maritime Training Institute at Tuticorin on Saturday.

The training institute set up by the Shipping Corporation of India, Mumbai, in collaboration with V O Chidambaranar Port Trust would benefit people of Tamil Nadu who are keen to enter maritime industry, Vasan said.

The classes for the first batch also commenced soon after the inaugural event at the existing facilities provided by V O Chidambarnar Port Trust, while a new campus for the Maritime Training Institute would be constructed on 4 hectares of land identified on the eastern side of Tuticorin Thermal Power Station Camp-II campus.

Vasan also laid the foundation stone for the construction of a permanent training institute with class room, workshop, swimming pool and residential accommodation for cadets and faculty. The shipping ministry has allocated Rs 15 crore in the first phase for establishment of the academy with the required infrastructure.

In his address, Vasan said that the said that the centre would take all efforts to implement the multi-crore Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project (SSCP). He said that the Centre was ready to fight the legal battle for implementation of the project in Palk Bay.

On the development of Tuticorin port, Vasan said that the outer-harbour project at VOC Port Trust would be taken up in phases and would be completed by 2021. Once the Rs 7,500-crore project is completed, Tuticorin would become a hub port, he said.

During the first phase, five berths are proposed to be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 5,421 crore. These births would enhance the capacity of the port by 43.3 million tonnes per annum, he said.

Vasan also inaugurated a facility for mechanical handling of equipment, quarter guard arms building and new roads to the second check post.

Centre to file affidavit on Sethu project

Union Shipping Minister G.K. Vasan said here on Saturday that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the centre would soon file an affidavit in Supreme Court to get the nod for Sethusamudram Shipping Canal project.

All out efforts would be made to implement the project, which would certainly enhance economic conditions of the country, the Minister told mediapersons after launching the Maritime Training Institute at V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tuticorin.

The project would be a major boon to people of Tamil Nadu and would cater to needs of those seeking employment, he said.

Responding to a query on fishermenĺs objection to the Sethu project, the Minister said the Centre had been clearly explaining about the project and added that the UPA government was extending livelihood support in the interest of fisher folks in many ways. He also replied that the slump in rupee value against dollar affected not only fortunes of the shipping industry but also many spheres of trade.

Navin,

We can say Tuticorin is the only city showing growth in Four modes of Transport in south TN. Thanks to the geographical location.

Unfortunately all the projects announced are sleeping

Airport Expansion, (2020 ??)
Ship port Expansion (2025 ??)
Rail port expansion, (2025 ??)
Bus port expansion (2030 ??)

Simple aaa seyya vendiya ella velayum ivlo complicate aa aakurangalay, ithula complicated laam vanthaa enna seyrathu?

Simpleboy Sir, Ashwin and Friends,

I do agree we are making progress but its not in a focussed towards the ultimate goal. Let me give some explanation from my own department - Railways.

It almost took 1.5 years to bring the day time train every month of begging and writing to SR. Our MP could have done a better job just by writing to the appropriate person and Rail Bhavan in New Delhi and the train would have come instantly. He made a perfect entry just to wag off the flag on the inaugural day with a banner with his name on it. It took 1 year of consistent persual to open the pitline and to extend the Vivek express to Tuticorin.

To top all this inappropriate work now our MP has got ideas to send us to trouble. How can someone ask for a prestigious train of Nellai to be extended to Tiruchendur. Already it has Chendur and what is the dire need to have another train to Chennai now? Tuticorin and Tiruchendur are not in the state to compare with Nellai or Nagercoil to bargain on trains.

It is at times really painful to see our representative in Parliament quiet low in knowledge.

G20 Summit takes note of India's commitment to infra reforms

New Delhi: India's commitment to continue with its ambitious infrastructure programme including the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor and setting up of two new major ports has been taken note of by G20 at its just concluded St. Petersburg summit.

The commitment has been reflected in the St. Petersburg Action Plan as the Group of 20 industrialised and major developing countries decided to reset its structural reforms agenda along more relevant, concrete, and well-targeted lines.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was among the world leaders who attended the two-day summit which concluded on Friday in the Russian city of St. Petersburg.

All the member countries have outlined their commitments on structural reforms to promote investment in a bid to lift potential growth, create jobs and contribute to needed global rebalancing, the Action Plan said.

"India commits to continue with its ambitious infrastructural programme, including the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor connecting the national capital and the commercial capital with high speed rail and road links entailing nearly 100 billion USD in investment.

In addition, two new major ports will be established and a new outer harbour, will be developed in an existing port through PPP starting 2013-14," it noted.

Giving a push to infrastructure development, the Union government recently approved a proposal to set up two major ports in West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh at an investment of about Rs.15,820 crore. The move to set up new ports comes after several years.

The new port in West Bengal, which will have a capacity of 54 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), is expected to require an investment of around Rs.7,820 crore while the other new port in Andhra Pradesh, whose projected capacity is around 50 mtpa, is expected to entail an investment of about Rs.8,000 crore.

The new ports will be notified as major ports under the Indian Ports Act, 1908. Major ports come under the Central Government, while minor ports are operated by State governments as well as by the private sector.

The new major ports are likely to be set up on public-private partnership (PPP) mode, and will cater to increased imports of coal and oil besides boosting the local economy and generating jobs.

There are at present 12 major ports - Kolkata-Haldia, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Ennore, Chennai, V O Chidambaranar (formerly Tuticorin), Kochi, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru (JNPT) and Kandla.

The need for a port at Sagar in West Bengal was felt as the existing ports at Kolkata and Haldia were facing capacity constraints.

The Action Plan also cites India's commitment in reforms aimed at encouraging labour force participation and human capital development to reduce long-term structural unemployment and increase employment.

It said India has set a target that 50 million people will acquire necessary skills by 2017, including nine million youth in 2013-14.

In addition, the national Skill Development Corporation will set the curriculum and standards for training in different skills and provides necessary incentives for youths to acquire their skill certification for which budget provision of about one billion USD is made for 2013-14.

The outer harbour project under PPP mode mentioned in the G20 Action Plan was in reference to the Rs. 7,500 crore project in Tuticorin.

It is expected to give a push to the export import sector in southern Tamil Nadu and would commence in 2015 and completed by 2020.

The project component includes dredging, construction of berths and jetties, establishment of road and railway connectivity and installation of mechanical handling equipment.

Declared open in 1974, Tuticorin port, one of the 12 major ports in India and the second biggest in Tamil Nadu, presently handles 33.3 million tonnes of cargo per year. Once the outer harbour with nine berths is ready, it is expected to handle additional capacity of 42 million tonnes. By 2020, the target is to achieve 100 million tonnes.

Tuticorin is a major export-import route for Tamil Nadu with goods ranging from chemicals, foodgrains, granite, sugar, machinery and construction material are exported while naphtha, LPG, diesel, liquid ammonia, urea, DAP and other finished fertilisers and fertiliser raw materials are imported.

It is surely a great thing that our project is discussed in G-20 World leaders meeting in Russia. Now i feel 100% that the project would commence and would be operated at the right time.........
