VIENNA's Inner City.

Since I joined I've made quite a few picture threads about Vienna, but all of them were focussing on topics and areas that are not particularly interesting and in virtually every thread someone came asking: "Why no pictures of the historic center?"

So last Saturday I decided to get up early (how sick is that?), take the S45 and U3 lines and try to make a good job of presenting to you the jewels of Vienna's first district.

A few notes:
-kirche = church
-platz = square
-dom = cathedral
-gasse/-straße = street

001
Stephansplatz:

002
Stephansdom interior:

003
The view from the northern (unfinished) Stephansdom spire. Visible: Maria am Gestade church, some unknown church in the north of the city, Spittelau incinerating plant (designed by F.Hundertwasser, who you might know):

004
View of the new highrise cluster by the Danube aka "Donaucity":

Sorry everyone, but Imageshack seems too be in bad condition today, so you'll have to wait a little longer to see the other 66 pictures.

But I hope that won't take tooooo long.

The Votivkirche and the General Hospital:

006
Some highrise in the NE, sorry about the grain:

007
Austria's highest building, the Millenium tower:

008
The (famous) ferris wheel:

009
The Simmering power station:

010
A bunch of tourists down on the square:

011
The roof of the Stephansdom, complete with the coats of arms of Austria and Vienna and the date 1950, commemorating the reconstruction of the cathedral after WW2:

012
The Stephansplatz:

013
Apparently I wasn't the only one enjoying the view:

014
On the ground again and roaming the streets:
Tuchlauben street:

015
Again the Tuchlauben:

016
The Jewish quarter. Holocaust didn't spare it, unfortunately...

017
The Synagogue:

018
Vienna's oldest church, the Ruprechtskirche:

019
View towards the OPEC HQs in the second district across the Danube channel:

020
Maria am Gestade church:

021
Typical architecture mix:

022
Hohe Brücke (High Bridge, how imaginative):

023
Freyung square:

024
Freyung again:

025
Now off to the Ringstraße:
Votivkirche on the Rooseveltplatz:

026
The place where I will probably spend a lot of time in over the next years: The main university:

027
The Town Hall, obviously influenced by the Belgian tradition, together with the food court of the Movie Festival. Great cuisine from all over the world:

028
The Burgtheater, the most important theater in the German speaking world, exactly opposite of the Town Hall:

029
The screen in front of the Town Hall:

030
The Burgtheater again:

031
A last view of the facade:

032
Only a few hundred meters to the south: The Austrian parliament:

033
The flag of the province of Upper Austria, the province currently hosting the second chamber of the parliament:

034
The Volksgarten, side view of the Burgtheater:

035
The Federal President's office in the Hofburg castle, currently the workplace of Heinz Fischer:

036
The Federal chancellor's office, right across the square. At the moment, Wolfgang Schüssel is working in there:

037
The newest part of the Hofburg:

038
Inside the castle's yard, crowded!

039
Michaelerplatz:

040
The Loos-Haus, the most important building by Adolf Loos, scandalous by the time it was finished:

041
The Hofburg as seen from the Michaelerplatz:

042
A view back from the Kohlmarkt street:

043
The Graben square:

044
Always lots of tourists:

045
Peterskirche:

046
The Plague memorial:

047
Graben again:

048
One of the many open air cafés:

049
Stephansdom from the Graben:

050
View of the Haas-Haus, one of the most controversial buildings ever constructed in Vienna (God knows why):

051
Hoher Markt square:

052
Kärntner Straße, one of the most expensive shopping areas in Vienna:

053
Kärntner Straße:

054
The Albertina museum, home of Dürer's "Rabbit" and "Praying Hands", IIRC:

055
Albertina again, including the (pointless but elegant) titanium wing:

056
Hotel Sacher, birthplace of the Sacher Cake:

057
The Mozart Info Box (WTF?) and the Hotel Bristol:
http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/8808/057wf8.jpg

058
The Staatsoper:

059
Some pictures of the newly reconstructed Karlsplatz, the center of Vienna's drug scene:

060
The Karlskirche:

061
Kunsthaus:

062
Getting on the Metro, one stop to the Museumsquartier:

063
Museumsquartier to the left, Museum of Arts to the right:

064
The Museumsquartier is one of the most innovative urban concepts in Vienna (a paradoxon, actually). The old Imperial Stables were merged with contemporary architecture into a modern art cluster with museums of all kinds, concert halls, installations, restaurants, bars and cafés. Mostly leftist students here.

065
The MuMoK (Museum for Modern Arts):

066
Just relax...

067
The Volkstheater, another traditional theater, but by FAR the most progressive one:

068
The Museum of Natural History, opposite the Museum of the History of Arts, which is identical:

069
A last view of the Museumsquartier:

070
And a very last picture, the Museum of Natural History:'

Hey, I recognized that ferris wheel. I saw it in "The Third Man" with Orson Welles...

Vienna is beyond words, I think. I hear the city has the best coffee houses in the world, too. Definitely one of my "must see" cities.

Amazing pics davidKunz.

I have made some photos from Vienna too, a while ago, but no comparission to yours. My respect.

I love the concept of the Musemsquartier btw. And also the Spittelau incinerator from Hundertwasser is cool. Its propably the land mark most people would like eagerly to know what the hell it is, when looking on Vienna from the Kahlenberg.

Wunderbar! What a great town, beautiful, alive, historical, modern, hapening... It's a masterpiece of a city.

I remember walking around the historical center for the first time and being perfectly overwhelmed. Even after knowing many European cities, looking at the Graben for the first time when coming from the cathedral is a shock to the system, so much activity and splendor! I love the cafes and the diverse neighborhoods. The place is bursting with music and art. Unbelievable.

A propos Wiener Kaffeehäuser (traditional Viennese "coffee-houses")

Thats propably my most favourite view at all in Vienna:

My coffee, and my newspaper (most likely in fact half a dozen newspapers lying beneath, all awaiting being read...)

How one of them looks from the outside:

Another reason for visiting a Kaffeehaus

"I just can be alone in company." Also this is a Kaffeehaus, when not meeting friends there for example.

Btw how can someone be outside of his home but still prevent being exposed to too much fresh air? Yep, by sitting in a Kaffeehaus

Stunning coverage of a stunning city.... I cant forget my stay in Vienna last summer.. Thanks for presenting a wonderful reminder of this amazing city.. Austria is blessed with some of the most beautiful cities in the world which includes Innsbruck, Salzburg, Graz apart from Wien, and then ofcourse when u move out of these cities, you are greeted by the awsome countryside..

Magnificent photo tour. On my initial visit to Vienna the city didn't grab me. I pulled up in a railway station that was nothing grand. After a while living in Kepplerplatz and commuting to the city, the grandeur overwhelmed me. The epitome of urban culture and pestige.

Just one more thing, I think picture 61 is the Musikverein not the Kunst Haus. It along with the parliament building is by Danish architect T. Hansen.

Oh and lastly, please consider posting your excellent pics in this thread.
