Glasgow International Airport (GLA)

Here are some photos and information about Glasgow International Airport, Scotland's busiest airport.

Overview.
Glasgow is Scotland's air hub, handling around 11.5million passengers per year. Glasgow offers flights to roughly 200 worldwide destinations, with direct flight on offer to 4 different continents, North America, Central America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Over 50 diffrent airlines fly to and from Glasgow, with around 300 movements per day.

Facts.
# Scotland’s busiest airport.
# 11.5 Million passengers per year.
# Around 200 worldwide destinations served.
# Over 50 airlines flying to Glasgow.
# 14 airlines have bases at Glasgow Airport.
# 4 airlines have their main hub at Glasgow International.
# Glasgow is the 3rd Gateway to the United Kingdom.
# 3rd after London and Manchester.

Glasgow has just under 30 long haul services which reach as far as the United States, Canada, Mexico the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle east and Pakistan. The majority of these flights are scheduled flights and operate all year round.

All three off Scotland’s home grown airlines are all based at Glasgow Airport. That’s Loganair who are a franchise of British Airways, Air Scotland and Scotland’s largest airline FlyGlobespan.

FlyGlobespan became the UK’s first budget airline to operate long haul flights, with a new daily service on a Boeing 767-300 from Glasgow to Orlando. In 2007 the airline will launch a daily service from Glasgow to Boston and a twice weekly service to Las Vegas and Barbados.

Expansion of Glasgow International.
In May a huge expansion of international departures and arrivals opened up, included in this is are new baggage facilities, shops, bars and two private lounges. More expansion work on international departures will be carried out during winter 2006/2007.

Just last week an expansion of the airfield with 4 new remote parking stands opened up and was in use.

In the last few years a lot of money has been spend on expanding the terminal and airfield facilities and this will continue over the next few year.

Aircraft using Glasgow Airport.
The largest aircraft that uses Glasgow Airport is the Boeing 777-300ER. Emirates Airlines use this aircraft on their hugely successful Glasgow to Dubai route. This route is expected to go twice daily from April.

The Boeing 747-400 also uses Glasgow on a frequent bases with Air Atlanta/Excel Airways, Travel City Direct and Virgin Atlantic.

Glasgow is the UK’s 3rd largest holiday airline airport, after London Gatwick and Manchester. The following holiday airlines are all operating from Glasgow. Most major UK holiday airlines have at least two aircraft based here, the smallest being a Airbus A321 and the largest a Airbus A330-200.

Connections.
In recent years many Americans and Canadians have been using Glasgow Airport as a gateway to Europe. These passengers will arrive into Glasgow on cheap flights from North America, largely offered by Air Transat, FlyGlobespan, US Airways and Zoom Airlines. Once in Glasgow they will use Easyjet or FlyGlobespan for onward flights to the UK and Europe. People from the UK and Europe are also doing this for cheap access to North America.

Glasgow Airport Hotels.
There are 5 hotels at Glasgow International. The Holiday Inn, Express by Holiday Inn, Ramada, Travelogue and a Premier Travel Inn.

Terrorism at Glasgow Airport
On the 10th of August 2006, American Airlines flight AA53 from Glasgow to Chicago was just one of many UK-USA flights targeted in the foiled liquid airliner bombings.

On the 30th of June 2007, two suicide bombers attempted to rap a jeep into the check-in hall of Terminal 1, security bollards prevented the car from entering the terminal, although the car did explode causing more damage to Terminal 1.

The two bombers were fought-off and beaten by members off the public, a baggage handler on his break, an airport taxi driver and two airline passengers.

Since the attack, the four members of the public have all won awards for there bravery, including the “Pride of Britain” Award.

Can we see some pictures of Glasgow Airport and a proper route guide? I saw Thomas Gravesen being interviewed on tele there it looked quite modern but how does it compare with other British Airports (Manchester,Newcastle, Liverpool and Belfast etc)? Does it suffer having low cost airlines flying from Prestwich?

I have only ever been in Glasgow ones but I couldn't remember it very well.
From the pictures it looks rather small - especially compared to Edinburgh.

Glasgow airport is far bigger than EDI. The pictures I have included are only off two different areas of the terminal, the main check-in hall and the international pier. I cant find pictures from other parts of the airport.

£290m Expansion of Glasgow Airport
BAA have unveiled a multi-million plan to turn Glasgow Airport into 'world class gateway' for the United Kingdom.

Work on £250m Expansion Begins

Skyhub to deliver ‘faster security, increased capacity and better customer service’

# Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 to be merged together
# New purpose built security screening area
# Wider choice of shops, bars and restaurants
# Delivering a better customer service today and into the future
# A multi-million pound plan to expand Glasgow Airport – the biggest single investment by airport operator BAA Glasgow for a generation – is underway.

The £250 million project – known as skyhub – aims to reduce security waiting times, increase capacity in the terminal and offer passengers a wider choice of shops, bars and restaurants.

Work has already started on the 4,000sq metre skyhub development, which is expected to take 18 months to complete.

The two storey development will provide additional seating capacity on the ground floor, as well as new retail and catering facilities, and a new purpose built security search area on the first floor, through which all departing passengers will pass.

This will replace the existing three security zones (international, domestic and east pier) which will later be converted for use as retail, lounge and other passenger facilities.

The new search area will have capacity for up to 14 x-ray machines, four more than at present.

The development will also include a flagship World Duty Free store open to all departing passengers.

Gordon Dewar, managing director of Glasgow Airport said: “This expansion will allow us to concentrate our security search areas in one location, freeing up a huge amount of additional capacity within the terminal. This is particularly important during the busy summer months when Glasgow Airport can expect to handle over one million passengers in a single month.

“Security, for any airport, is of paramount importance and as passenger numbers increase, it’s important that we are able to screen passengers quickly and safely. We have already announced a major investment in additional staff and x-ray technology. skyhub takes that investment a step further and will give us the flexibility and the extra capacity that we need to provide a fast, efficient security screening service.

“Our aim, ultimately, will be to reduce the amount of time passengers wait in security lines and, in the process, deliver a better customer experience for our growing number of passengers.”

Glasgow Airport’s domestic and international search areas have recently been refurbished - and rebranded skyscreen - as part of a trial for the planned single search area.

Customer service director Derek Provan said: “We see skyscreen as the launch pad for a new type of airport security at Glasgow. The security and safety of our passengers is something we take extremely seriously, but airport security doesn’t have to be an ordeal. skyscreen is designed to create a more relaxing security environment that puts passengers at ease.”

The new layout will also bring retail benefits for passengers. Under BAA’s plans, the existing airside/landside boundary will switch, so that most of the shops currently landside (before security) will be located airside (beyond security). Once through security, passengers can shop, eat and relax anywhere in the terminal.

“Glasgow is quite unusual in that the majority of shops are currently landside. By switching the boundary, and moving the majority of our retail offer airside, it means passengers will enjoy bigger savings and more choice,” explained Mr Provan. “Once through security, passengers will have access to the full range of bars, restaurants and lounges on offer at Glasgow Airport.”

Mr Dewar added: “skyhub is the biggest single investment by BAA in Glasgow Airport for a generation and underlines BAA’s long term commitment to the airport. It is an exciting, ambitious project which puts the interests of passengers first. We want to make the journey through Glasgow Airport as safe, smooth and enjoyable as we can for all our passengers, delivering better service not just for today, but for the next generation of travellers. skyhub is the new way to travel at Glasgow Airport, our gateway to the future.”

I flew into this airport back in the summer of 2006 on American Airlines. Had my first real English Breakfast there and felt very comfortable at that airport. I planned to get out and see the city during my 6 hour layover but due to the security concerns at the time I decided to stay at the airport so I didn't miss my connection to Birmingham (BHX). I loved the United Kingdom.

I’ve also used the GLA-ORD AA service, last time I used it for GLA-ORD-MIA-ORD-GLA. Glad you enjoyed your experience of Glasgow Airport, shame that you didn’t make it into the city, its well worth a visit.

Warning to terrorists: John Smeaton is back on duty!
Scottish travellers can breathe a sigh of relief today and terrorists should beware. Four weeks after an eventful cigarette break propelled him into a worldwide star, including features on the front page of the Wall Street Journal, praise in the House of Commons, and appearances on news channels worldwide, John Smeaton will return to work at Glasgow Airport.

At 14:00 today, Mr. Smeaton will return to his position as a senior ramp assistant at the airport, with CNN - the US-based news channel - sending a crew to document his return to Airway Handling Ltd.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, Mr. Smeaton's uncompromising recount of his actions won him a worldwide fan base. His blunt remarks rang true with viewers, particularly when he stated: 'This is Glasgow - we'll just set aboot ye,' and chided one alleged bomber thus: 'You're nae hitting the polis mate, there's nae chance.'

A website set up in his honor was visited by 500,000 people in its first 48 hours. Visitors to the site even raised enough money to buy him 1400 pints of beer at an airport hotel (although he will donated half the money to a charity which cares for injured military veterans, and will use the rest to fund a night out for other people involved in thwarting the bombing attempt).

As things begin to return to normal, Mr. Smeaton, who lives with his parents near the airport, can still expect a few high profile events. He will be invited to an official reception in Glasgow hosted by the First Minister, Alex Salmond, and is even tipped for a place on the New Year's Honours List.

US Airways Report 10% Increase in Passengers on Glasgow to Philadelphia Route
US Airways has hailed the success of a summer marketing campaign with Glasgow tourism partners that has seen a marked rise in sales for their daily flight from Philadelphia to Glasgow.

US Airways has announced a ten per cent increase in seat sales on its Philadelphia to Glasgow service during July, and strong sales continuing this month. The airline praised the contribution to their success made by a six-week marketing campaign in the US by VisitScotland with Glasgow City Marketing Bureau.

The campaign was devised by VisitScotland to attract increased leisure visitors to Glasgow and Scotland during the peak summer period. Campaign ads enticed passengers with shots of Kelvingrove, iconic Charles Rennie Mackintosh attractions and powerful images of Highland landscapes, whisky and world-famous golf courses.

Glasgow City Marketing Bureau also invested in the campaign, bringing the Glasgow: Scotland with style message to potential US visitors.

VisitScotland is the organisation responsible for attracting leisure tourism to Glasgow. Tom McWilliam, VisitScotland’s area director for Glasgow, said:

“I see these great results as a direct outcome of that partnership and our wider tourism industry, which is completely committed to making a success of routes into Glasgow,” he said.

Philadelphia is a fantastic city in its own right, very like Glasgow in many respects, and an important hub for onward travel connections. Despite the strong pound, it continues to draw American visitors to Scotland, and for US-bound travellers it’s an affordable and convenient way to travel direct to the States.

US Airways flights can be booked online at www.usairways.com
