I hope it’s not that long.

There have been suggestions up here that Glasgow could be under new ownership by next month.

That would be of BAA's own choosing if it happened; the CC will not deliver it's final report (this is an interim statement for review and comment by the industry) until early in 2009. The Government (DoT) would then have to come to a decision as to how to proceed. It would probably be in the 2010/2011 timeframe before any change of ownership was completed.

To much time for BAA to do more damage to Glasgow

Ryanair announce four new routes for winter 2008/09
Budget airline Ryanair, have announced their fourth new route from Glasgow Prestwick Airport for the coming winter. Earlier this year Ryanair announced three new routes to Spain and Portugal which are due to commence operations at the end of October.

Today the airline announced their fourth Italian route from their Glasgow base, this time to the northern city of Turin. Flights to Turin will commence on the 20th of December and will operate every Saturday.

Flights are expected to prove popular with skiers as well as Italians wishing to visit Scotland's premier tourist destination, Glasgow; Scotland with style.

Ryanair will not have this route to themselves as holiday budget airline Thomsonfly, also fly to Turin, but from Glasgow International Airport.

Ryanair flights to Turin and 30 other European destinations can be booked online now at ryanair.com

bmi baby release more flights for Winter 2008/2009
bmi baby will increase the number of flights on offer from Scotland's gateway this winter. Just last month the airline released a much reduced schedule of flights for the coming winter from Glasgow International, including completely axing flights to Ireland West Knock.

bmi baby last week said that "all winter 2008/2009 flights are now on sale".

But today, just 24 hours after BAA have been told they will be forced to sell Glasgow International Airport, the airline with tiny fares have increased the number of flights they plan on offering from Glasgow this winter.

The airline will now fly to Cardiff up to 10 times per week, with flights to Birmingham and Nottingham operating up to three times per day. bmi baby will also continue to fly to Ireland West Knock, after previously confirming the route had been axed. Flights to Ireland West Knock will operate every Friday and Sunday.

bmi baby flights from Glasgow to Birmingham, Cardiff, Knock and Nottingham can be booked online now at bmibaby.com

Glasgow Prestwick is much smaller than Glasgow International but it still handles a good number of international traffic, around 2.5million passengers each year. Glasgow Prestwick has direct flights to 42 destinations, 37 of them are international.

The airport also handles a huge number of freight, I believe Prestwick gets more 747 cargo flights than any other UK airport.

Most of the short haul airbuses, A319, 320, 321 etc pass trough Glasgow Prestwick to refuel on their delivery flights to the Americas.

British Airways increase flights to London City Airport
23 September 2008

British Airways will increase their flights between Glasgow International and London City from late October.

Currently, British Airways offer up to four departures a day on their Glasgow International to London City route, but from the 28th of October, this will be increased to five daily flights.

Flights will depart Glasgow International daily at 07:00, 08:45, 12:30, 16:00 and 20:30, while flights on the return London City to Glasgow International service will depart City Airport at 06:50, 09:30, 13:40, 18:05 and 20:30.

The increased frequency of flights will mean greater flexibility for business passengers, particularly those making day-trips between the United Kingdom’s two biggest cities.

London City Airport is also ideally located for leisure passengers travelling to London for weekend breaks and even day-trips. London City Airport is located in the centre of London, which makes it a much better option than flying to Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted or Luton.

British Airways flights from Glasgow to London can be booked online now at ba.com

First phase of Skyhub expansion opens to passengers
21 October 2008

The first phase of a £31million extension to Glasgow Airport's terminal opened to passengers today.

A major new ground floor arrivals hall for UK domestic flights was the first part of the project to be unveiled.

Renfrewshire Council Leader Derek Mackay greeted the first arriving domestic passengers through the new terminal extension, arriving from Belfast at 7.20am.

A bar and restaurant was also opened and other retail outlets will open soon in the new sky hub terminal.

The second phase of the development, a £12m security area, will come into operation next week, replacing the three existing search areas.

From next Tuesday all departing passengers will be routed through the central search area on the terminal's first floor.

The first passenger to arrive in a gleaming new arrivals hall was David Gordon, 30, from Belfast.

The procurement manager who travels to Glasgow every week on business was greeted by airport officials and Councillor Mackay who presented him with a bottle of champagne.

He said: "It's beautiful. I think a facelift for the airport is long overdue for such a big city. Glasgow needs an airport to match this cosmopolitan city."

Another passenger from the first flight to arrive from Belfast, Marguerite Gibney, 41, from Belfast said: "It's bigger, brighter than before and the new pub is very nice."

Passengers using Terminal 2 at the airport will also benefit as they will not have to go outside to get to their check-in area. Roy McCubbin 46, from Carluke, who was flying to Paris, said: "It's great to be able to stay within the airport terminal to get to T2."

Russ Harris, 43, was waiting for a customer to arrive for a meeting. He said: "It's a lot more welcoming, a lot less cluttered and it feels fresh. It's also more secure for the baggage area as before there weren't any doors there."

Derek Mackay, leader of Renfrewshire Council said: "The last time I was here I was cutting the soil. "The airport is a key part of Scotland's economy. It's fantastic to see it developing in this way. "I hope it symbolises a very bright future for the airport."

Managing director of Glasgow airport Amanda McMillan said: "The airport has been growing and this is a natural progression. "It gives us a great new space for arriving passengers and gives us all the opportunity to meet and greet and move more freely through the building. "I think it's fantastic. It's crisp, clean and airy. It's just a different class and when we open the new security area next week that will be the icing on the cake."

A third phase, due to start this month, will see the existing terminal upgraded and refurbished to provide additional seating, new fashion stores and catering facilities.

Perfectly safe. The runway at Prestwick is very long. The photo makes it look shorter than it is so exaggerates it looking uneven. Also very few airports in the world have completely flat, even runways. The runway at Edinburgh, for example, goes up a slight hill.

Glasgow Prestwick reveal plans for major airport expansion
30 October 2008

Glasgow Prestwick Airport is set for huge expansion as it bids for a bold future.

Bosses plan to build a new terminal, launch transatlantic flights and more than double passenger numbers.

The radical growth is outlined in a draft master plan for the airport’s future, which FlyGlasgow can reveal.

Airport bosses plan to create over 2000 new jobs and predict Glasgow Prestwick will be handling 12 million passengers per year in the near future.

Chief Executive Mark Rodwell admitted: “There is no doubt that the aviation industry is currently facing a challenging time with volatile fuel prices and unfavorable economic conditions.

“But the unique thing about this industry is that it always bounces back stronger than before.

“We’ve seen it with SARS and September 11 and it will happen again here.

“Our growth predictions are based on the greater of three possible scenarios and it assumes that a number of business opportunities come to fruition, as well as new developments in the domestic, European and long haul markets.”

Mr Rodwell revealed flights across the Atlantic could be leaving Glasgow Prestwick “within a few years”.

And work has already begun on a £1.7 million development of the existing departure lounge, which should be finished by April 2009.

Mr Rodwell added: “We’re not in a position yet to build a new terminal but at some stage we will.

“Our growth will be taken in steps and we have to be flexible but we’re already studying designs for a terminal.”

Bosses at Glasgow Prestwick are also expecting a boom in freight traffic – rising at an average of 4 per cent each year.

The bold master plan comes hot on the heels of Ryanair launching another three routes from Glasgow Prestwick to Tenerife, Malaga and Faro as well as Aer Arann who have launched a new daily flight to Cork.
