DOHA | Aspire Sports City Tower | 318m | 1043ft | 36 fl | Com

Client : Doha City - Asian Olympic games 2006 - Qatar

Designers : Hadi Seenan - AREP (architect) - Ove ARUP (Engineer) - MaP3 (facade design)
Data : Height : 300 m, facade surface : 30 000 m2,

Budget : 140 000 000 Euros

Expected completion : End 2006

Doha City has planned the construction of a 300 m tower to support the olympic flame at the top, and to become after the games a high standard hotel, with revolving restaurant and sport museum.

The design is based on a central concrete core, covered with a steel mesh facade, with a varying perforation ratio, vertically and on the azimuthal angle, in order to differenciate North and South facades.

This is the first time Asian Games is held in Gulf region; therefore they want to do something outstanding: build a whole tower for the flame!

BTW, CULWULLA... We got info from people working on the tower saying that it's going to be 318m not 300m. So, will you please update that in your constructions update diagram?

Thanks...

Yes, of course I carried a safety harness for this "catwalk". The life-line (a steel rope) was just outside the picture, above my head, where you can secure yourself. Nevertheless walking on this tiny little catwalk (45cm wide and 150m above ground) was a cool thing with awesome and somewhat scary views down to earth.
We especially used the "catwalk" for surveying our reference points to get coordinates for the total station. These ref points were set by vertical lasers, fixed on the tower wall near the ground. We used a semi-transparent plate to put our prism on the red point (see first picture below).

The second pic shows me on Level 45, while staking out some fixing plates for the steel beams on L46. This stake out was definitely one my most scariest jobs, because I must stand on this small beam with nothing but 200 meters of air below my feet. In the background you can see the new carrefour, and on the far background the "old" Hyatt Plaza.

Greetings, Karsten
