You know I have read that they could fit another runway at Newark, where the port is. But I am sure more than one more runway is needed to alleviate traffic in the area.

The port is very valuable, more than the airport. Unless the land is not being used for Port activities, I don't see them sacrificing this land.

There is room on the west side of the airport if they demolished the brewery.

There is also room for another closely spaced runway beside the existing 2, if the terminals were reconfigured.

Some interesting proposals drawn up. Not sure how likely any of those would actually happen:

Not going to happen, given that it would require tons of enviromental assesments alone to infill that portion of the Jamaica Bay part of which is National Park Service land.

What about the one on the left then? And are there any other expected projects at JFK? Its an old airport, and some things could be upgraded, like there is not really any connection between all the terminals other than walking outside[which would be pretty bad if it was really cold and snowing for passengers on connecting flight.]

The runway layout plan on the left is more likely to be approved but it would displace a large portion of the cargo area at JFK which is a huge entry hub for air cargo as well with nearly 100 cargo air carriers currently operating out of JFK, so there would be plenty of opposition on that front as well. However the runway plan on the left still has a much greater chance of being approved then the one on the right, and the remaining cargo flights could possibly be diverted to other airports nearby such as Stewart where there is enough room available for expansion.

All things being said however, there will be no easy way to expand JFK, considering how densely populated and built up the area around it is.

But JFK is growing in passenger traffic, would a plan to expand the airport eventually have to be enforced?

no, JFK is done... any plans will face stiff opposition and if ever approved, will probably be delayed by many years from lawsuits and all that NIMBY stuff... it'd be better if they build an entirely new mega-airport outside the NY metro area..

anyway, haven't you heard of AirTrain to get around the terminals??

That doesnt make any sense at all, those renders really doesnt go with the real JFK, much better try another airport but so far there no room to make another airport, maybe the answer is stewart Airport. Perhaps they should make a direct link of train from Manhattan to the upstate Airport in less than one hour and that could reduced the crowded of JFK, LGA AND EWR. Port autority owns for a leased of 93 years the stewart airport.

that could be a good option but cargo is not a main issues in JFK.

Maybe the terminals can be renovated to make room for more space some how. For example, maybe they can make it one large "terminal" where the current ones stand today.

I agree, the terminals should be renovated, some of them look really old, and unfit for passengers.
