Watched an excerpt from Churchill;s funeral yesterday (as one does). There's a shot where you see the flotilla making its way down the Thames, and in the background there is the dome of St.Paul's towering over everything. Makes you realise how quickly things have changed in such a short space of time.

Looks beatiful but a little sterile. Why is that bridge all grey and ugly today?

It seems St Paulīs has always been blocked by buildings on the north bank, of course not as horrible ones as those that there now though.

It needs demolition pure and simple..

God damn those old pics of LOndon make me sad Look at the South Bank, so dense and with handsome industrial victoriana. And the streetscapes are so literate and elegant.

Damn

Actually looking at some of those bankside pictures, it was very industrial, alot of chimney stacks and small industry, London would look very bizarre if they still lined the Thames today. I think post WW2 it was inevitable London was radically rebuilt, going from the heart of a vast empire that supplied it with all manner of manufactured goods, to a global city dealing with electronic money. And I'm glad London doesn't suffer from smog and heavy pollution like they did when they had all those small factories in Victorian times

The Aston hippodrome in Aston, Birmingham. Demolished in the 1980s. The likes of Laurel and Hardy performed here but it had a turbulent history.

Look at the human scale buildings on the right...none competing with St Pauls...and fast forward to today, yuck.
