No part of the Operación Chamartín masterplan has been realized so far, nor has any chance of being realized in the near future. The Four Towers are the result of a different unrelated deal between the Madrid city council and the Real Madrid football club (they are built on the former Real Madrid training fields, as can be seen in one of the above photos).

The Operación Chamartín depends on a deal between the Madrid city council (responsible for the urban planning) and the central government's Ministry of Public Works (which controls anything to do with the Chamartín rail station), plus it also depends on the resolution of a long series of legal battles with the former owners of the lots where the Chamartín station was built. So the project has been mired in political and economic fights since its inception almost two decades ago. The only time when it had an actual chance of getting the go on was spoiled because of the tragic 11 March 2004 train bombings (which happened on the very same day the Operación Chamartín was scheduled for approval). So now we have the social democratic PSOE party ruling the central government, and the Christian democratic PP party ruling the Madrid city and regional governments, and an agreement between them would be necessary for the Operación Chamartín to see the green light. Something which definitely is not going to happen for the time being, especially because the political fights and enmity between the rightist PP and the leftist PSOE have only soured since the results of the general elections three days after the train bombings, which ousted the PP from the central government (an electoral defeat they haven't yet fully digested).

Moreover, even if, after some more decades of waiting, the Operación Chamartín finally gets its official approval, it will still have to face the sure NIMBY campaigns orchestrated by angry neighborhood associations, communist and green party members, and the like, which have been very vocal in their opposition to any kind of highrise project in the city. Not to mention if another skyscraper-hating mayor like Álvarez del Manzano steps into the city hall office.

Well, I always love the Castellana St. It's amazing! It has the most skyscrapers of Madrid, in the photo you can't see these towers, only the Ministry, KIO towers, Europe Tower, etc.

Yes, he likes reforms a lot: Now he´s preparing a reform in Paseo del Prado, where the museum is, and he has put down the earth 6 kms of highways and now is making a park over it (near the Royal Palace), and also is fighting to bring the Olympic Games to Madrid. As you´ve been told he´s very popular not only in Madrid but also in Spain. In fact, he´s the most popular politician in Spain according to the last survey.

Yes, the problem is that his party (Partido Popular) has another candidate who in fact lost last general election in March. Everybody knows that this man would have won the elections. But politics are like that.

Maybe in the future he´ll be a candidate, who knows. He has more power now in his party, but still there is the same candidate for the moment.

Gallardón is more "modern" that the majority of the conservative party. He doesn´t care about sexual matters, for example, and supports the Gay Pride openly, while in his party some people doesn´t like things like that or doesn´t support them and a few like him like them.

He doesn´t argue with the opposition, but he is pragmatic: he always has a lot of projects. In fact he´s the major that has got more votes in Madrid ever in the elections last year.

If he discovres sombody that has taken money he sacks him/her quickly.

He´s young and ambitious, that is his temperament.

It´s one of the very few politians in Spain that is widely respected for leftwingded and rightwingded people. He started some years ago the extension of the tube net, when he was the head of the regional goverment of Madrid. I dont´ remember the number of kms, but maybe 50-100 kmos more in four years. That was the beginning of Madrid´s big net for the tube. Then he came to the Town Hall five years ago. That was the moment when he made disappear the highway along five kms of the river, with lots of problems for the traffic. And after four years he won again the elections last year because people saw that it was worthy. In the next years he will put plants and trees along 6 kmos of the river, reform Paseo del Prado and prepare the candidature for the Olimpic Games,as I ´ve told you. He loves skyscrapers, and maybe the Trump family will build a hotel in a new skyscraper in Madrid. He likes that kind of things. He´s very European but also very modern, he´s not a major with conservative taste, so common in European Town Halls.
