This is not about China's government. This is about the whole global business that runs their factories and plants IN China and not at home. Europe has their clean and clear air at the expense of China and some other countries.

This model has not been updated for years. There's even White Magnolia's old design.

Very true, Europe pollutes in China instead of doing so at home. Even so, speaking of "clean air", I can assure you that in Italy airborne pollutants from traffic (and more) are above the limits in most large cities for two-thirds of the year.

That's not entirely true, why would they build some of the largest coal-fired power plants IN the city?

Foto taken by myself earlier this year, see more.

Really?
They haven't even finished building one of the tallest buildings in the world and they've already 'lost their momentum'

Yes. And please don't get me wrong. Shanghai Tower is awesome and one of my favourites, but there is not much coming after it. Sinar Mas Center will also be finished soon and then there is only Zhenru Center and maybe (with a big maybe) Xujihui Center in the pipeline until 2020. This would bring Shanghai to 7 supertalls in 2020. According to ZOrgs China Supertall list, this puts Shanghai on place 15! (toghether with Suzhou) in China, when it comes to supertalls. The picture does not get better when you look at 200m+ skyscrapers. A handful of projects and that's it. I don't really know the reasons for it. Vacancy rate is quite low, the population grows steadily, gdp still grows with about 7.5% per year and land prices are astronomical. According to conventional logic, Shanghai should be sprawling with skyscraper- and supertall construction but it doesn't. Maybe others can elaborate more on this, as I really don't understand the reasons for it.

Yes, there are bad days (nowadays more than some years ago). But most of the time it isn't that bad.
Calling Shanghai a smog capital of the world is just ludicrous. This title belongs to Beijing, New Delhi, Xi'an, Dhaka etc.
I'm not hating on Shanghai. Just in my book if it's not abnormal to see someone walking around with a face mask to deal with smog then the place qualifies as a smog capital of the world.

I am not biased toward any race. Just in my book if someone with a face mask most likely is a chinese person. I often see chinese people wear face mask in San Francisco or Sunnyvale in California too. But sometimes it is not necessary smog, it could be allergy to plant or others. Anyway, you can't judge a picture with only one person in the City wear a mask. Sometimes, that person has it reason to wear like flu season, allergy, or something else.

cheers:

People have survived much worse during the industrial revolution when the sky and buildings in big cities were blackened with soot.

China is now like the us in the 1950s or the uk in the 1920s where the economy is booming and society getting richer. Of course more energy is needed and everybody can afford a car now.Thats why there is more smog like in the devoeleped countries in the past

I live in Shanghai and I'm a regular runner. I check the pollution index to dettermine if I can go out and run. Shanghai is much better compared with Beijing in smog level. The air is mostly fine this year (partly thanks to the rain). I have concern on October Beijing Marathon (where I will run) though.

i still have the hope that at one point Shanghai kicks off a second CBD and with that a new wave of skyscrapers and supertalls come. But even if so, that will take quite some time.

External structure looks pretty much complete. Just a little glass missing.
