Probably old stuff. But for those of you who missed it: Go look at Gensler.com and see the Design Update presented there.

Seems to be a very sophisticated design and great looking piece of architecture!

I just watched a Discovery documentary about buildings in Shanghai. It seems that the main problem there is the soil which is very soft and muddy. Foundation for a tower of this size (bigger than anything else built in Shanghai) will require exceptionally strong foundation and engineering sophistication. So perhaps no surprise that it may take a while before the framework (the easy part?) will start going up.

Look at the size of all the temporary offices just for the construction of this tower are, wow. At least four 4 story construction offices just for one project visible in just part of the photo. China does not mess around.

Those aren't offices, it's where the construction workers on the site live.

I believe many of those were for construction workers (barracks). Maybe one of them serves as office for engineers and designers.

By the way, is that horseshoe-magnet-like structure (with blue and red paint) between the Shanghai World Financial Centre and the Jin Mao Tower's a work-of-art?

Shanghai Tower: A Vertical, Sustainable City

Dan Winey of Gensler describes his company's sustainable skyscraper design for Shanghai Tower, which was conceptualized as multiple neighborhoods stacked vertically.

No offense to Taipei but 101 would look TERRIBLE in Shanghai.

Taipei 101 only looks good standing by itself. Otherwise it's design probably doesn't really fit it well.

Jin Mao is the one that is supposed to represent traditional Chinese forms, so perhaps no need for another one

It was said in some documentary that Jin Mao represents "the past", SWFC represents "the present" and Shanghai Tower will represent "the future". A rather nice symbol expression in urban language.

absolutely agree with you, putting 101 along with other skyscrapers is a disaster.

Yeah, thats the reason why i dislike the 101, too. In my Opinion it is just ugly as hell.

101 is I agree a bit too extreme in its cultural refferences to work as part of a cluster, Jin Mao's more restrained design suits that role much more. The Shanghai tower having a less "showey" design works well IMHO, gives the Jima Mao and SWFC more of a presense in the cluster just like the IFC doesnt overshadow the other more characterful buildings in Hong Kong.
