SIADRs design fits so good with the other two towers. It looks like a tower from Star Trek and its 700+.

So why didnt they pick that design?

Don't worry, maybe they will build that in another location some time later.

Who knows how many underground floors they are building. Maybe around 10, meaning that the structure wont come above ground level till around mid 2010.

Exactly. There must be a reason why the plan for the Tokyo Sky Tree was for a height of 610 meters, and then, just as soon as the GZ TV tower completed (and the piling for the Shanghai Tower was also over), they changed it to 634.

The reason is simple, Tokyo Skytree just want to claim the title of world's second tallest structure. And of course being a developer, you would want this title to attract more visitors. I do not think it has any political or historical reasons behind it, you guys are thinking too far..

I'm assuming it's bedrock they're looking for.

I don't think that's how they do it in Shanghai - the bedrock is too deep.

Here's my understanding. Please correct me if this is wrong:
They've driven hundreds of piles deep into the soil. They'll cut them off at a certain depth and pour a big and thick concrete pad on top of them. The building will go on that. The depth of the piles will ensure that the pad is stable enough to build on.
I don't think there is any reason for the hole except that they want several underground floors and they need to go a bit deeper than that to pour the base.

This has got to be my favorite supertall. Hands down the most elegant st out there. Well done to Gensler and co.

This recent lecture on the Shanghai Tower is well worth watching in full and should answer many questions: http://www.asiasociety.org/video/art...tower-complete

Wow, i never knew there was such an organisation involved behind this construction. Thanks for the video, it would have been better if the powerpoint from the over head project was able to be seen too.
