Well the Oriental Pearl tower and the China pavilion expo 2010 are examples of ancient chinese architecture built with modern technology.

I don't mean to hijack here, but how is the Pearl Tower an example of ancient Chinese architecture built with modern technology?

I just don't see it.

Chinese symbolism in the design

The design of the building is based on a verse of the Tang Dynasty poem Pipa Song by Bai Juyi about the wonderful sprinkling sound of a pipa instrument, like pearls, big and small falling on a jade plate (大珠小珠落玉盘/大珠小珠落玉盤/d zhū xiǎo zhū lu y pn).

Yes, it is interesting how a lot of Chinese buildings reflect a lot of their culture. The Petronas towers in Malaysia reflects their culture as well with the use of the stars etc. Symbolism is an important element to a sucessful building. In places like Aus for example, especially perth, i don't see much symbolism in the buildings which reflect our culture unfortunately.

I cant really see the chinese element in the pearl tower, apart from the fact that it is red making it a bit tacky..

JinMao however has a lot like a modern ancient chiense structure.

the only one thing good for pearl tower is, when you stay in it's second ball, you can't see pearl tower itself, but other better buildings and skyline.
anyway, pearl tower has been a symbol of shanghai skyline.

It looks to me that they're about 30 meters deep and that they reached the ground. They're finishing the piles now and after that I hope to see some concrete going in!

Untill mid February most likely, they still have about 1 and a half more level to dig. Diggings will be finished before the chinese new year which i believe is the 14th feb.

新民网跟踪报道:

他们表示,上海明年一定要扩大内需, 使GDP保八进十,并预祝上海明年的世博会取得成功。
