I think it's great just the way it is...Buildings and towers get spires just to become taller, so people can remember them because of the height...Shanghai Tower has incredible design and people will remember it not because of it's height, but because of design...So, it doesn't matter 2 or 10 meters up or down...Design is factor which is the most important here...Height of 632 mters is just a big plus...

Same reknown architect designed Burj as designed Shanghai Tower

Marshall Strabala, American design architect, has now designed 3 of the 10 tallest buildings in the world. He and Adrian Smith did the Burj while at SOM,
Strabala designed the Nanjing Greenland Financial Center, and Strabala left SOM to design the Shanghai Tower. Look him up on wikipedia.org, great flicker site and biography or google him.

My guess is a lot of the below grade area is reserved for parking. Hence the large scale.

Totally agree! At 632m Shanghai Tower will be the second tallest tower in the world upon completion! Now that's pretty cool any way you look at it!

Beautiful design...my personal favourite u/c skyscraper at the moment..

Depends on construction speed. Ping'an IFC isn't that far behind, if people in Shenzen are fast they might overtake the Shanghai Tower somewhere along the line.

Shenzhen is fast.

The 384m Shun Hing (Diwang) building was built at a pace of 4 floors every 9 days.
The 355m SEG Plaza was built at 3 floors every 8 days.

But don't worry my fellow Shanghai fans, there's a fairly good chance that Ping'an will not have the spire, so the height may only be 588m.

True, I guess. Shenzhen are real fast! But I'll say one thing, if ST has anything going for (that's plenty imo) then it's certainly the most beautiful tower u/c anywhere today. Some will say height isn't everything and a great design is more important. For me, ST has it all. It will stand at 632m and has one of the best designs I've ever seen..

It is possible, but i think ST having one year lead is gonna be pretty hard to overtake. However ST looks a lot fatter, foundations and each floor could take longer than PingAn. I dont really mind about height, i wouldnt swap ST for PingAn even if PingAn is taller.

With the spire on the Ping An, i think both towers are world class icons. About the height, i guess it will sound better for China that Shanghai or Beijing holds the tallest tower on the mainland, but for me, it doesn't really matter. I really like both towers and hope that they come out grand.

it wouldn't be wise to announce any height increase while Sky Tree is still under construction because the japanese can also make up some excuse to increase the height. Let'em finish and then the chinese can seriously think of that

I honestly think there is no point in going for second tallest building the world. I personally think that the beauty of the Shanghai Tower can easily put the Tokyo Sky Tree to shame for all 365 days a year
