Huh? They look like temporary housing for workers to me.

Just maybe.
No. Those are road tunnel entrances. They have nothing to do with this project.

I mean, the digging around the site, which already done, is part of the tunnel road system in Lu Jia Zui area.

The building near the 21 century mansion were built in the 60's or 70's, quite old. They will be demolished in the future, I don't know, maybe 10 years or 20 years later. But after the eastward extention along the huangpu river, there still a lot land could be used to built. Remove will cost a lot.

Up close they don't look so bad, maybe misplaced.

I have a feelng that the apartments there are expensive...

The whole red area is scheduled to be cleared in a short-mid term. Probably within this decade.

No, they're pretty shabby inside.
All concrete consruction with no central heating so they're bloody cold in winter and the reason they top out at around 6 floors is 'cos that's about the limit for hiking up stairs - there are no lifts either.
I used to live in a flat opposite the stock exchange so about 500m from the bottle opener. The flats in the compound were originally (from what I could gather) for workers of one company. They got to buy in at some point and the one I rented had passed down to a younger couple. They could rent it to a foreigner for a little above the going rate and live a bit out of town with a nice bit extra every month. Not sure if that was entirely legal though the rules for where foreigners can rent seem all-but-gone now.
I had freinds living in the blocks in that last picture and it was a lot shabbier over there than my place!
Most of these will get knocked down and towers will replace them, but there are probably ten thousand of these blocks and so around a hundred thousand flats like these in Pudong so it will take a while.

Actually those buildings are not in the red area... are next to it (green)... close to the big 3.

The buildings there are more modern, the older ones are in the red area...

When the red area has been redeveloped into highrises, I can guarantee you that green area will be redeveloped as well. Perhaps not the highest priority, but sometime around the completion of the red area. If not it would the biggest planning error ever in the history of bad planning.

U think?

Is commune in Shanghai to mix highrise areas with lowrise areas.

So u won't have a "dubai marina" efect, where most people see only the windows of the skyscraper next to them. It might look more "cool" in pictures, but for the people living/working there (who will actually buy them) might be more important to have somme view...

Just an example from Puxi: If there would not be an lowrise area in front of that highrise area, all he could see would be the windows of other highrise. But with somme "clearence" in front, the view is just spectacular...

I wonder if the workers complain of stuff being thrown down the hole from the other towers

Exactly! Too many people suffered too much in those shitty boxes. They should be relocated to some nice modern high-rise ASAP!
