Forgive the sentimentalism, but I think the loss of Laoshan Xincun (the traditional apartment blocks outlined in the red box) will be sad. I don't think these residencial buildings are that old - I think they were part of the initial development of Pudong which was around the early 90s / late 80s (?) - they certainly don't look anything older than that. As much as they may have started to look shabby, I think a bit of restoration and retrofitting will make these great places to live again.

The whole idea of getting rid of Laoshan Xincun seems a bit ... 'slash and burn' ...

Most of the people living there will not be able to afford the high rise aparments that would be built there. They will most likely end up farther out in pudong where the prices are not sky high. Even though the outside may look like sh1t, I used to live in one of those buildings, some of them are really nice inside, my old house there was actually nicer than my high rise apt in Puxi!

Back on topic, that hole is looking awesome. It seems to be going very fast, even for China!

I think the main problems with these apartments are wear and tear, nothing too fundamental. They are structurally sound and spacing between blocks is adequate. Afterall these are places where real people live ...

I dont think this tower's constructiopn is stopped during the chinese new year. There are still 20000 workers working at the expo site, so i dont think this tower will be stopped either.

the samething ppl are saying about these red tops ppl say about Stuyvesant Town in manhattan. Its old and doesn't fit in, So it should be replace. I don't see anything wrong with affordable housing in this area, plus they get a nice view. And I thought the hole for Chicago Spire was big this one seems to be on a whole new level.

Those apartments aren't that bad. The only thing I think is wrong with them is that the streets dont go through, and that all the buildings are identical, spice it up lets get some life in there make the buildings look different, nobody wants to see the same thing over and over.

Every single residential district in Shanghai is from the cookie cutter school of design, so it's certainly not limited to that one.

I lived in a residential district of similar vintage in Puxi for 18 months, and it wasn't that bad, really.

Shanghai's estates need to be made permeable and have the gates and security offices removed.

No way! You are too confidence about the public security of the city.

It's all perception, or 'fear of crime' rather than crime itself. Public security in Shanghai is certainly no worse than in London.
