a few pages ago someone said "only 178 meters...dissapointing height".

There are a thousand buildings under 178 meters that are better than these crazy supertalls all these aspiring cities keep building. Notice how cities like New York and London aren't rolling out a new 600 meter tower every year? Its because they don't have inferiority complexes.

It amazes me the "taller taller taller" attitude that exists in the world today, especially in "up and coming countries". Although to be fair, I guess that was the US many years ago. Its just that we didn't surround our towers with office parks and parking lots, we actually built cities around them.

The juries still out on this puppy, i did like SWFC so if it ends up anything like that i'll probably like it. Shanghai a pretty neat city from what i've seen and heard.

Not everyone has vast empty lands that can be sustainable with lowrise buildings. Just look at the density figures in China's coastal areas. They HAVE to build tall if they don't want to suffocate later.

Mostly they don't have money.

No, that IS the US. Now. Where have you been in the last 80 years? The US are the country of BIGGER, longer, higher. Only they're bankrupt already, so they can only look at what they already have and eat lotsa donuts and burgers to get fatter and follow up with the concept.

Notice how cities like New York and London have economies that belong in the sewer?

It has far less to do with an inferiority complex and far more to do with economies that are expanding at double digit rates and MUST have HEAPS of office space, housing, hotels and so on. In a place like Shanghai with brilliant public transport infrastructure and diminishing available land, building up is a logical thing to do. They need LOTS of space NOW.... Building UP is smarter... So we have lots of supertalls being cranked out.

If the economy of New York expanded by 15% next year, then I would bet quite a lot of money that several supertalls would be proposed.

Also one must remember Shanghai is 7,000 Square kms wide and New York around 1,500 Sq kms. So shanghai has more or else stretched the limits to which a city can be extended .So i guess it is high time They start building vertically up .If still they are having office space problems .It was in march 2009 when the office space vacancy in Shanghai crashed down to 1%

Is the car park beside the SWFC temporary?

Can't wait until it isn't a hole any more.

Have you actually been there? Because it's a really nice place! That photo looks cool but gives you actually no idea how the city really is.
