Indeed, China's Pacific coast isn't exactly the most sparsely populated strip of land on the planet, it's obvious that there's a real need to build vertically, particularly in the Pearl River Delta and Yangtse River Delta regions.

AMAZING ones (HJ, kix111). I'd like to stand there in this moment. I think I should wait a while.

Is Dubai outside of Big N lists?

When money and technology allow it, the best way for humans to build is "up"... Land is something to spare as much as possible.

As a Dutchman i can't understand why our densely populated country is still expanding its cities by building enormous stretched out subburbs to house people, while open space is declining quite fast.

Build compact! Efficient in transport, efficient energywise, efficient space wise... Go China!

Shanghai already IS no 1 (not just top 4).
The skyline is vast, and Pudong that's always pictured is merely a fraction of it.
What you don't see is the much more built up Puxi half of the city.

What you normally see, Pudong:

...and what you dont, Puxi - 4000 highrises and counting, every year it builds more highrise space than Manhattan
due to the population boom:

nah, HK is still #1. i don't see a "real" skyline in shanghai except in pudong. just because you add 10,000 highrises doesn't mean they form a skyline. that's why sao paulo and other megacities with a dizzling number of highrises don't have a pleasing skyline at all. what shanghai needs is height, and thankfully the ST will provide that. of course shanghai is in the BIG 5 (HK, NYC, chicago, dubai). and i'm not denying that with all the current construction going on, shanghai is catching up with HK pretty fast. but still, it has a "long" way to go. sorry for going OT.

None of this will matter in 2016.

I reckon with the floors almost having caught up they're gonna need more of those huge steel columns very soon.

Yup, the aliens have already landed (the concrete pumps) and weekend is always the best time of the week due to the scarcer traffic allowing for a better flow to the site of the concrete mixers

i majorly disagree
hk clearly has alot of those smaller highrise types also, and a few more supertalls and mountains, but shanghais skyline is more massive, it is hk more dense, i think shanghai is not far but close to hk
