No way should the Pearl Tower be the centrepiece! I would prefer to see that hideous tacky thing demolished. It's the epitome of tasteless 1990s Shanghai. Some of those other green glass 90s "space age" buildings in Lujiazui, with assorted pods and helipads on their roofs, are likewise disposable. They're architectural embarrassments the lot of them.

I somewhat agree on the main point however. Good skylines have balance and proportion. Building too tall will only make all of the surrounding 200m towers look irrelevent. I would be happy if they chose the best design (SOM). That would give Pudong a skyline centred on three impressive signature towers in close proximity - but if they're going to choose any of the other proposals then I'd rather it was built elsewhere in the city - perhaps around Renmin Square. I wouldn't be right to have the SWFC overshadowed by anything inferior.

I totally agree with you about the Pearl Tower and all those other green and yellow Lujiazui buildings of the 1990's! That also goes double for Century Boulevard. These things are all monstrosities, relics of a time when architects of Shanghai were designing buildings and planning districts with blind-folds on! I mean what were they thinking?! Century Boulevard should be narrowed, the Oriental Pearl needs to be demolished as do all those other disgusting buildings. Although to Shanghai's credit, buildings in Pudong in the 2000's have become much classier and better, demonstrated by the Jasper Tower and friends cluster. Plans for late 2000's and 2010's look very well-designed too. Hopefully they will build enough of Jasper Tower-like buildings to block out or overpower the hideousness of 1990's monstrosities.

somehow I like the oriental pearl, it's definately not the traditionally beauty, but's just so unique, I think only with the tower, SH's skyline are simply recongnizable. I think this building has some tricky design, I said this before, maybe u don't like it now, but 10, 20 yrs later? that's what I call futuristic. Would u think the 2007's BMW is beatiful, if u look at it in 1980s?

that last render is made by some chinese design institution...hopefully that is not the final design

shanghai center should be u/c somewhere near mid 2008, height should be around 580m...will be the ultimate landmark of shanghai (shanghai center > swfc)

correct the official name for the plot is z-32

the contract of the golf driving range and the lujiazui company ended in 2007...so i guess it should be removed soon

I'd tend to agree unless its another observation tower, really though I think we've reached a stage going after height records just isnt worth it. Shanghai's image would be better suited by a 500-600 meter building and a few more 200-300 meter ones in the surounding area.

I'd say a 570m to a 600m building would suit the site well. but i honestly dont think they will go any higher the 600m+
