Considering the distance and mm on the camera lens it doesn't look bad at all.

The buildings in those lower left corner of the picture are actually 10-15 story high buildings, just to give a sense of the scale of this city.

I'm pretty sure Shanghai is spread over a larger area than LA?

Nope, blue sky here everyday. Went to Shanghai last summer and the sky is just pale and yellow for every.single.day of the month.

you don't have a blue sky in la everyday. just like there are certain times of the year where there is perfect blue sky in shanghai for many days in a row, with no sign of pollution.

I love when people just generalise ....

I used to live in Pasadena (a couple of blocks away from CalTech) and I recall several days where I would only be able to see the outlines of the mountains to the north due to the smog. Ofcourse there were days where the sky was clear and blue, but only when the wind from the oceanfront was strong enough to make it inland. Most days I'd say were just like what I've seen in Shanghai pics.

I don't mean 365/365 days are smog-free, clear sky.

Probably 2-3 weeks out of all 365 days where it will end up pretty hazy. Things have been improved a LOT when you compare 2011 to something like 2001.

In summer days Los Angeles do not look like this every single day. Whereas in Shanghai, the situation was more like this for my month-long stay there.

Every single day.

I am sure that Shanghai looks beautiful during winters and springs, but pollution gets pretty damn bad during summers comparing to LA.

you just listed the two worst seasons in terms of air quality for Shanghai. and summer is always the best season thanks to the typhoons blowing away the particles in the air.

This was taken by blackstation in late July 2010, basically air quality from last summer was the best in years.

BS. I live in Shanghai, and as I recall last summer had plenty of blue sky days - probably more than I've ever seen in a summer here.

Geez I'm not a native in Shanghai...

I stayed there last year from mid June until mid July and never had days like that. The air was real bad too, only 10 or so shots came out well from the thousands of pics I took there.
