Maybe no plots, but there is a lot of space inbetween the Thomson Riviera and the river. From the road (Fucheng Lu) you can't even see the river. Inbetween there are some restaurants, the river walk/park and some parking areas. They should build some nice low rise blocks and stretch out the river walk to the ferry port.

Shanghai doesn't have a good soil foundation, so it's a bad idea to stack buildings close together, which the soil won't be able to support. Also, building spread out will leave room for future development. I bet many old cities in this world wish they had plan and leave room for future development like Shanghai. You have no idea how complicated underground grid and sewage lines are if having an old and dense area like Manhattan. Add that with the subway and water pipes and it become an underground mess. New York's underground utility network is affected whenever new construction work starts. And it's a pain in the neck for every construction company that's doing ground work in New York. Shanghai is trying to avoid that path taken by unplanned developed cities.

With that said, there are also large plots of land leftover from the Expo 2010 which are again, are under planning to become another CBD. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

There is no "Manhattan level," only Shanghai.
Expo site is huge, both Pudong and Puxi areas. Hope not another CBD (already quite a few CBD's), heard Shanghai wants to organize the Olympics in 2028, maybe they can use the Expo area for this (if they get it).

Nordschleife, please keep posting pictures! Just (please) make them a little smaller.

Even with the speediest internet connections, it takes a LONG time to load some.

You can't always get large and high quality images, so once I find them I would post them here. But I notice that pics are getting larger and larger these days, Mori and Gouken definitely wants to show us more details
Relax, when the national day holidays is over things would get back to normal.

There is very little street life around these towers. Although it's the CBD, most people don't play and live around here.

thats how it should be... cbd doesn't stand for central living/entertainment district.

I agree, a CBD should not be just a place where people work with no soul and street activity. It should be a 'part' of the overall city and at night it should be alive.
The concept of CBD in like American and Aus cities are like this - busy in the day, but empty at night.

No no no, people shouldn't be having fun, or even thinking about having fun, whilst they are at work, so CBDs must be horrible and sterile places.
