Emporis is wrong, it also has a photo of this tower sitting beside Jin Mao Tower in Lujiazui. I've seen the stacking plan for the tower, unfortunately no renderings though. From memory it was about 340m. It's still in the design phase though so the final result could end up different. The design will probably be finalised later in the year as construction of one of the subway lines along Hongqiao Rd is underway and the station will link directly with Xujiahui Centre. The timing of Xujiahui Centre to some extent depends on the subway line. Very recently they started work at on this road beside Grand Gateway, they are going to dig a hole as they do every kilometre or two so they can lower parts down to the tunneling machine to put the tunnel wall up as they dig. This subway is going to be completed next year i think. Also there is another line that is to come down Huashan Rd and early plans showed it directly linked with Xujiahui Centre, however i don't know if it will still link with this as they have already dug a similar hole as mentioned above beside Pacific Department Store which is too far from the site for it to cross through there.

From The City Model of Shanghai it look like a 460m Tower near Jin Mao, but maybe this Model is very old...

Don't give up hope about Xujiahui project. They never released renders of the 340m, 180m, 130m version, therefore the heights aren't likely to be definitive.

Since Lujiazui has only a few plots left around the former shipyard facilities in the near future they'll probably encourage larger projects in Puxi.

Why do some people keep checking info about Chinese projects at Emporis? It is a total waste of time

It is not only that they ignore most supertall projects on going in this country, they haven't even added some 200m+ projects which have been topped out already. Other towers above 200m which were completed in 2005 are still u/c according to that website.

I know so somebody better edit that page on wikipedia (one advice you wont get the page by typing in shanghai centre because you get SWFC, so you type in 'list of tallest buildings in Shanghai" and scroll down to find shanghai centre at proposed section above Xujiahui tower)

Think SWFC resumed construction late 2003 (november 16th to be precise)... and foundation was already done. So 5 years seems a minimum construction life.

2 years for constructing a 580 m. giant? Impossible

It will not be such a big surprise for me if it be less than 500m.

The world have changed. Considering the USA real estate crisis, I don't think investors will spend 1.5-2 bilion USD. Same thing with Al Burj, I belive it will not surpass Burj Dubai.

Building planners said the building will top out in late 2010, not be completed, there is a big difference. It is definately possible, remember this is China, they are able to have teams working 24 hours a day for nearly the whole year, the only break in construction is usually for 2 weeks during spring festival. Most buildings go up around one floor ever 3 days here. Although Shanghai Centre is likely to be more difficult to construct though due to the irregular shape, and the height will require pretty solid foundations.

By the way expect a name change as the english name is just translated directly from the chinese name, and there is already a building on West Nanjing Rd called Shanghai Centre (上海商城).
