Would anyone support me in this thought: Shanghai Tower is the highest real skyscraper in the world.
It is clearly not, but I see that the Burj Khalifa is just high to get attention. But I fell that the height of Shanghai Tower is needed and not build to just get attention.

So you say when a building is build, in your opinion, for attention, it's no real skyscraper??

No! That's whats hard about it.
I would also say that your conclusion is way off. I'm not sure if you understand me since you seem to get in a defensive position?

First of all, he wasnt being defensive. Second, no city in the world builds a 600 meter building out of pure demand.

From what I hear the burj is about 40% filled and still not totally completed interior wise.

If I understand you correctly, you are referring to the conflict between architectural and roof height.

The biggest debate over the world's tallest building has to have been over the Willis Tower and the Petronas Towers. Both the roof and antenna of the Willis Tower are higher than the same features on the Petronas Towers, but the Petronas Towers have higher architectural heights because of their spires. The Willis Tower also has more floor space than both Petronas Towers combined.

There is even a "smiley" for it.

However, I think the Burj Khalifa beats the Shanghai Tower in all categories except floor area.

So wait, you are saying that Shanghai Tower is being built solely on demand and / or because there's no space? Sure.
Every tower >500m is more or less a trophy tower. We all know that building a couple of 100 - 200m towers instead of a 600m+ one makes more sense economically.
Chinese cities are in a rush to develop new landmarks, and what's better than a shiny megatall? I don't blame them.

I believe the Burj Khalifa has 517 000 m2 and the Shanghai Tower has 380 000 m2, so the Burj has more. However, the top floor of ST will be 3 meters higher than BK top floor.

@hunser
True, but I'm sure that Shanghai Tower will be completely filled, considering Shanghai's low office vacancy rates. (You can't say that about Burj Khalifa)

I am guessing that one of the reasons the Chinese are in such a rush to get so many fancy towers up, even if there might be no immediate need for them, is that they believe wage and hence constructions costs will go significantly higher in the future so they are getting them built while they can do it relatively cheaply.

Sure. Shanghai is a big city, a huge agglomeration with a huge GDP. What is Dubai? A village with a street of supertalls built for just being sold and not living in...

I believe one of the head project manager of the Shanghai Tower said they decided to start the tower in 2009 because the materials for building were cheap during the economy downturn.

Also, if you have ever worked on anything above 30 floors, you will probably understand why offices over 200m are more eye candy than practical. It fricking takes forever waiting for the elevators.
