I think that the Oriental Pearl Tower fits just perfectly.

In Mori's latest picture, with the crane jump, I notice couple of things: first, the supercolumns at the top now look thinner than they were in the floors below; second, in the top floors, it looks like the openings from the core to the outer parts of the floor (not built yet) have increased in height - is this now the level of the hotel floors?

Maybe because they have to hold less weight, so they can be somewhat smalller.

You are obviously refering to the Jin Mao Building. The problem with it is. The buildings main body volume goes up to 350m, while the rest is just a very fragile crown structure. From a distance, the 70m tall crown structure, doesnt have a massive appearance. So, when the SWFC was finally finished, one could see, that the JM building simply hasnt the bold effect, a solid 420m tower would have. If the tip of the crown, was a roof height. The SWFC wouldnt have such an effect on the JM. Two towers with just a difference of 72m. But the designs make this 72m appeal in a more blatant way. When THIS tower is finished, this will have almost twice the height, when it comes to a volumeful building body, than the Jin Mao. And will create a dramatic peak, which will lessen JM effect on the skyline in an even stronger manner. Its more complicated than you make it appeal.

What i really dislike about this building, is the double layer facade. This tower, is simply a round tower, with a fragile fake second skin, to make the building look fancy. A very cheap way, to create such a building, with a lot of waste of unused space, big spaces that are hard to cool down in the summer and heat in the winter. Window surfaces that requiere maintanance etc. etc. It might look futuristic, but it really isnt. And the mall in its lower floors, will just cause a reduction of street life in Pudong. I critisize the city planners much, in how they make this part of Shanghai very sterile and homogenous looking.

Yepp, I'm sure that creating ~600m of that double layered glass curtain wall along with the support system for the outer shell was just a 'very cheap way' to make the building look fancy.
I'd guess that as a matter of fact it was insanely expensive, that's why the ST will only return the 2.2 billion dollars investment in 50 years as opposed to the more usual 20-30 - according to the architect.

I don't know if this was posted before here, but it's a pretty detailed and interesting pdf about the design process.

I think it's nearly impossible to build that design 632m instead of 178m. this tower needs supercolumns and such design hasn't enough space for all that, it's a residentail tower too.

Well, Absolute doesn't twist anywhere near as much as Malmo's Turning Torso!

Wonder what the floorplate will look like in Shanghai Tower's double glass cover?
