The under-construction Shanghai Central Building (R) reaches 500 meters Thursday. With a designated height of 632 meters, the building is located in Lujiazui, Pudong New Area, Shanghai, next to the Shanghai Jinmao Building and Shanghai World Financial Center. The construction of its main structure will be completed in July and the building is expected to open in 2015. Xinhua

Confirmation,, awesome,, next is Tapei 101's stick (spire), I'd assume,, mainly because NY's hasn't been officially named a spire yet,, so it's safe to assume 8 more meters, well 9 for sure, and we will have watched it take the title as #3 in the world? Any disagreements?

None here, though CTBUH has a T/O standard.

So when ST is T/O it will be #2, and when the rest of The Chinese 4 top out it will look like this:

Khalifa 828
Ping'an 660
Greenland Centre Wuhan 636
ST 632
Abraj Al Bait 601
Goldin Finance 597?

Then there is the Qinhai and/or Caiwuwei in Shenzhen and who knows what that will be in height or if they are the same scraper or multiples.
...and Century Plaza Suzhou will be 729+.

Everyone will drop a notch when KT is finished.

Also, do not forget about Century Plaza, which will probably start before those two even.

Incredible view, especially since it seems quite foggy at street level!

So officialy there at the top, where the obs deck will be, on the 7th truss, correct, the next part, the top, (hollow part), will the concrete go up through the roof piece, or beyond the 7th truss? or is that it for the core? And the rest will be cladding and roof, above the 7th truss?

The core will stop 3 floors after the 8th truss belt, not the 7th truss belt. There are 8 truss belts in all. The last truss belt you see in recent pictures is the 6th one, and the core openings for the 7th one are clearly visible in post #14464 in Big Dog's 3rd picture.

The purpose of the 3 floors above the 8th truss belt will serve for the 3 observation deck levels. Above that and and around it as well, the rest will be a steel structure to form the crown, that will contain the wind turbines.

Anyone here know the current theoretical max height for a modern 3X3 core? It looks as though with Khalifa, Wuhan, Ping'an, Goldin and ST that once the concrete core gets to ~600m, it becomes much much more difficult to get the building higher. The crown of ST, the diamond of Goldin, the arch above Wuhan and the Shenzhen and Suzhou designs, KT's huge spire, BK's huge spire, and so on.

It seems that at this time, 600 or 650m of core is the max and above that you have to erect spires or tapering hollow spears or steel structures with at best a small service elevator and more commonly a ladder in a tube, to get additional height.

Any IE's, CE's, ME's or Architects who know anything?

Construction technology presents more limits than engineering theory. If you had the right materials and technology, you could scale the core up infinitely. That said, concrete technology today probably limits buildings to 2km, but nobody has the will to build one that would cost several billion and not much return on investment.
