Well, Shanghai has been home to the tallest building in China since 1997, time for other cities to have their place in the sun.... :-)

Ping'an Shenzhen, if it gets completed, will only be taller by spire, which is a total bullcrap measure. Look at them side by side on a diagram and you will see which one is taller.

True but in such a case we'd have to review heights of a number of prominent projects including Taipei 101, the Petronas Towers, 1WTC and not least the Burj Khalifa. I guess we have no choice but to accept the current status quo in height measuring before it gets changed.

I suspect it wouldn't be an easy task to do because there is more than a good chance that many bodies, developers, architects or even national governments won't accept anything that will make their buildings shorter even if that's just on paper.

Imagine trying to convince the owners of Burj Khalifa that their tower is not 829 but something around 700m or telling some patriotic New Yorkers that the Freedom Tower is, in fact, 120m shorter than currently advertised.

You could do it. Just be honest. I am American I can admit that the One WTC is 1368 feet tall. The 1776 figure is bull. If they wanted to get to 1776 they need 1776 feet of building. Even park avenue will surpass WTC in my book. Taipei 101 is taller than Willis, SWFC is taller than Taipei 101, Willis tower is taller than the Zifeng tower in Nanjing, SWFC also beats One WTC. I think the WTC antenna is functional, which should render it 1368 under any measurement standard.

Not exactly. Modern roof height isn't about roof slabs because many buildings don't have any roof slabs. Modern roof height is about appearance, about what appears to be part of a building and what appears to be only an addon. Therefore solid crowns like that of the Shanghai Tower are counted towards roof height, meaning that by roof Shanghai Tower is actually 632 meters tall

Taipei 101 surpassed Jin Mao in 2004.

burj khalifa spire looks like part of the building not addon, just saying

Other than that roof is a roof. Open crown is not a roof.

Exactly, open crown is not, however this is a solid crown, open only from above. I personally define a crown as solid if it has a solid boundary on at least 3 sides, if it hasn't got these then it's an open air lattice crown and is not counter towards roof height. Having 5 solid boundaries this crown is counted towards roof height. Roof doesn't mean just the highest horizontal concrete slab of a building. A roof is the top of a building, the highest part of a building. Countless buildings don't even have a highest horizontal concrete slab yet they still have a roof

Of course you ignored the first argument

Roof is the structure enclosing the building. If shanghai tower have an open floor above which there is just crown this is where the roof is. And for the same reason roof of the burj khalifa is at very top of it.

My friend's dad just gave me an open invitation to visit him in Shanghai, where he's apparently drinking buddies with the ST architect.

I've been meaning to get out there for a long time, but guess I can't keep making excuses now.

I didn't ignore it, I only disagreed with it and was reluctant to speak about it because this is really not the place for this. I will start a thread in Tall Talk, so there we can talk about this further. You're welcome to join that thread once I'll make it

No, it does not and do we really have to talk about this in this thread?
