Chinese rivers look like this no matter how far upstream you go and how remote you get. Unless you are looking at a small alpine creek, rivers in China get muddy brown once they get to the first valley floor.

It's the soil. Blame the last ice age.
Multiple dead fish and other livestock are found dead by the Shanghai river. Not to mention that Shanghai dumps nearly all of it's trash into it, and only a small portion is actually treated. The river is a cesspool.

Sorry for bringing this up, I know it's rather off-topic, but I think people should know

Meanwhile, keep the updates flowing
The color of the river changes with seasons, usually brown in the summer and green in spring, and greyish in winter. However, it's the stuff you don't see that worries people. When it's clear it's the most alarming.
Ying River which looks to be fairly clear here

is actually the most polluted river in China, with frequent algie blooms and stinky while foams. it's clear because it can't maintain a stable ecosystem in its waters.

Shanghai has a great waterfront walkway. You can pretty much walk around the whole riverside next to it. I think its great there are no buildings directly on the waterfront but set back behind the pathway and highway. Makes for a much better pedestrian city experience
