My guess is we're going to have to suffer through the next big housing crash that we're building towards before a 1000m project in China, and I wouldn't be surprised if it put a damper on a number of the 500m+ projects worldwide when it happens.

That won't happen in a while. I feel like just because in the 1900s China didn't have a lot of supertall projects, they're catching up now with all these supertowers. I could be wrong, but I think it'd be at least 2030 before someone comes up with something more than 1000m.

It might not be in the height top 10 but definitely in the top ten of all the other charts. Just look at SWFC or Jin Mao or 2IFC or ICC or CITIC Plaza, these are all towers which come to my mind when it comes to supertalls

regardless of its position, it is by far the coolest design in that list.

nah. a couple of years ago we had no 600m building rising, but then with Shanghai Tower several came up at once after that. now before the first 600m building is finished we do already have a 700m and a 800m monster in preparation works in the country, it is just a matter of time until a 1000m tower will be proposed, especially because if they propose a 900m building they might consider just making a longer spire just to get the world record.

What would happen if a light / medium sized plane crashed into the cladding?
Wouldn't there be a ripple effect due to the mass?

Wondering whether they took this into account?

Forget terrorism - accidents happen. A plane flew into the Empire State Building by accident and the same can happen to this building if the weather conditions are bad. It would be a freak accident but that's part of reality.

Well, if you drive a goddamn airplane into a building, forces affecting the cladding would be the last problem people have.

Back on topic, this is some of the best clear-glass cladding lately. Might very well be the best skyscraper in China at the moment.

I present you a 1007m tower currently under construction:
