That would be a bad idea.

I think some people place too much emphasis on height. The ST is a gorgeous tower, does if really matter if it's a little taller or shorter than Ping An? It's not as if they're standing side-by-side.

. Those last pictures show clearly the work completed recently:

1. A new circular structure at the very top of the core;

2. The observation floors are completed out to the outer supports.

Someone can tell me more about this? please its so interesting!!
The shanghai tower actually has two curtain walls. The inner one will surround the offices while the outer one surrounds a number of "outdoor plazas" that will all be climate controlled. So if you are working in an office you do not have to go down to the base to go "outside". While technically you are still inside, you are outside of the first curtain wall.

Slightly off topic but what are us skyscraper nerds going to when this beauty is completed? It has been almost eight years since the first post announcing Shanghai Tower... Many of the other supertalls around China will be completed soon enough... Not sure how many more 90+ floor towers China have up their sleeves but we might be in the golden age of construction there... so what are we to do? Maybe put up a virtual wailing wall for us as ST is completed? I really love this building. China as a society really outdid themselves with this one (and all the others)...

Shenzhen has more than enough of good stuff in the pipeline. Perhaps none as great as ST but we're looking at China's new skyscraper capital in the making.

...oh I don't know about that...Wuhan Greenland Centre is stunning and depending on my mood, is my favourite. The other being, naturally, ST.

Will see how these look IRL with cladding, lighting and sunlight.

There are other countries that build skyscrapers. My attention goes to the Kingdom Tower.

Skyscraper construction comes in waves. After the Sears tower was built in 1974, nothing taller was built until Taipei 101 in 2004 (I'm in the anti-spire lobby) The rest of the 70's and all of the 80's only the Bank of China HK, JP Morgan in Houston and US bank in LA were built , and all were barely supertalls.

Since the internet and mobile communications are changing the dynamics of offices, there may not be that many more office buildings to be built. Just look at all the tallest buildings in the world now. I think Taipei 101 is the tallest all office building, everything taller is mixed use. The only thing we have to look forward to is tall residentials.

The Kingdom tower, while awesome, will most likely be a white elephant like the Burj Khalifa. It will be the swan song of the current skyscraper boom. At least we lived through it. Imagine being a skyscraper enthusiast in 1975, so many proposals will come and go, and you have to wait 30 years to see a taller building than the Sears Tower. Hell I was into skyscrapers as a kid, and I remember when the Nina Tower was proposed, it was supposed to be 1500 feet, and I thought that was insanity 49 feet taller than Sears!!!!
