Well, IMHO, landscaping works are quite tedious given the large area and sophisticated design, so I'm not really surprised with slow progress.

First time stepping into this thread and finding the Gardens already stunning. I didn't know about the super trees proposal and am looking forward to that for sure. Looks great and thanks for all the photos!

Can anyone tell me whether the designs for the conservatories has been changed?
The original design submitted at the competition has 'fins' which gave it an interesting organic look. I love this design. ![]() The latest photo at Wilkinson Eyre website, the architect for the project, shows that the design has been change to this:- ![]() The fins has been replaced with "stripes". It just look and feel so inferior to the original "fins" design. can we complain? Feel so cheated. |

Dumping by the Bay
Not Bra lah, how can have one big one small. Got breast cancer also not like dat one lah.
It's more like "Ba Zang" by the Bay. Blend in well with the dragon boat race to be held there. ![]() The original fins design is so, so beautiful. It looks like some ferns or sea shell. Fit in the environment very well. It really gives the whole design so much character. Must have discover that the fins block out all the sunlight after they have won the competition. This new design sucks. Stupid architect, bloody cheat

The previous design blended well with the super trees.. now this is just modern looking for the sake of being modern looking with no regard for the surrounding structures. bah!
The video is great! Those designs look like something from out of Myst and I'll be impressed if they can pull of this well! |

It's confirmed, the conservatories are now "Ba Zang" by the Bay. I wrote in to nPark and the following is their reply. "Thank you for your feedback. The original competition submission was conceptual, and during the detailed technical development, the design was further refined to maximise the daylight levels in the Conservatories for planting purposes and to have a clear spanning structure internally. This resulted in a reduction in the size of the external arches (or fins as you refer to them), creating one of the largest spanning gridshell structures in the world. Whilst a departure from the original concept, we believe the Conservatories will retain their iconic and dramatic qualities that will be no less inferior to those at the competition stage. Best regards, Ong Yan Szu ▪ Corporate Manager (Gardens by the Bay) ▪ National Parks Board ▪ DID: +65 6557 9141 ▪ Fax: +65 6557 9120 "

It's a little sad that the design has changed indeed, but the comment from the manager makes sense. When it comes to make a project a reality, there are other elements to take into account that unfortunately restrict the possibilities in terms of pure architectural design. One good example is the French National Library in Paris, where they wanted to put the books in glass towers - the concept won with this design - before they realize that books worst enemy is daylight! They thus had to add opaque panels on the glass towers, which dramatically changed the design eventually!Let's see what the conservatories will look like when they'll be completed. We might have a good surprise! |

I agree. I also prefer the original design but the new one indeed looks more practical. I can imagine how much sunlight would the giant arches block.

Kk. Now I'm pissed. Why then did they claim that the use of the sunshades on the Esplanade was necessary?
p.s. I lurrved the original plans for the Esplanade. |

Well, IMHO, if the conservatories are supposed to harbor plants, more sunshine is generally desirable, unlike in the Esplanade that was not an indoor garden from the very beginning.
