looks like Khalifa (Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan = President in UAE) came in the last second and wanted the tower to be named after him.Entire district (Downtown Burj Dubai = Downtown Burj Khalifa) will be renamed to that too, and about 500 name-sign's already up here and there! |

Which is one of the primary reasons all the fuss about Dubai's mega-projects does not excite me that much. I may sound like a pathetic dick myself but I find the architecture and projects in Dubai, including the Burj Dubai (or whatever its new name is) itself, as lacking sophistication. The tower just screams "I want to be tha taaaaalest" without much else to say. That's fine and still impressive but I think there are much more exciting and sophisticated projects happening all around us which actually serve a purpose.
Sorry for being such a sleazy t*at

Actually, the architecture, designs of many of the buildings is amazing, new and smart. The masterplanning policy around it however, is trash, putting all these really great towers right next to eachother, with no connection or whatsoever, and many with big atrium's and plaza's, and a big shopping center inside (it becomes very cheesy). It is somewhat understandable though, since Dubai temperatures is so high all year around there is no way they can have the street life cities should have.

I posted something about a quality project in Addis Ababa a few pages back,
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...&postcount=723 There seem to be several projects popping up in the city, and we're talking nice designed buildings here! Commercial Bank of Ethiopia headquarters Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Henn Architekten has won first prize in an architectural competition for the construction of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) headquarters in Addis Ababa. Once completed, the 42-storey tower will be the tallest building ever built in Ethiopia. The firm’s proposal includes, on the longer sides of the slender office tower, a gap in the facade which will reveal the city from a new perspective. The reduced reflection of the glass skin will permit a contrasting glimpse inside the building. This openness will continue to base level, where the entrance area will be revealed. The tower will be accompanied by a conference centre and a shopping mall. The buildings will be clustered around a sunken landscaped plaza. At the competition awards ceremony, CBE president, Ato Bekalu Zeleke, said: “The construction of the new headquarters building is a gesture of CBE's aspiration to become a world class bank.” A seven-person jury composed of Ethiopians and foreigners in the field selected the winning architectural design from 21 local and foreign contestants that submitted their work. The skyscraper, due to be built in five years' time, will bring CBE’s now-scattered organs under one roof. ![]() AU (African Union) conference hall Addis Ababa, Ethiopia A 150$ million project been fully financed by the Chinese Government. image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() Other projects, unknown to me. But we have a 5 star hotel been planned and some 20 office highrises. Price 1.5$ billion. ![]()

^ The same concept as Turning Torso! That's why the one in Malmo should be second best in the world!
