cladding started

got today from the Koryo Tours:

Ryugyong Hotel construction continues apace – Well known to lovers of unusual architecture as well as DPRK watchers in general the 105 floor pyramid-shaped Ryugyong Hotel in central Pyongyang is one of the most recognizable buildings in the North Korean capital. As mentioned in a previous newsletter, work resumed in May 2008 after a 16 year hiatus as a contract was signed with Egyptian company Orascom to make the building functional, if anyone knows how to build a pyramid it’s the Egyptians and although it looked at one stage as if total construction time would rival those at Giza, the Ryugyong has recently been undergoing a growth spurt with glass cladding spreading across two sides of the structure, and even the rare sight of electric lights inside being seen in the evenings as work goes on. Planned opening date for the hotel is April 15th 2012; the 100th anniversary of the birth of President Kim Il Sung, massive events will obviously be taking place at this time so book a tour now! Of course Koryo tours will have a full range of trips on offer at that time.

It'll be interesting to see which tower is finished first: Ryogyong or NEATT in Songdo, haha.

Emaar??? wth???

oh well, its gonna happen I can't be too distressed. That tower wont be much profit making compared to many other supertalls around the world. But I'm sure there's good reason for Emaar to be investing in this project.

So is the talk about weak concrete all rubbish? and the concrete is fine?

Nobody can possibly know what quality the concrete is - it seems to be strong enough for non North korean companies to be happy with continuing construction.

Simple incredible news. When I started reading the article, I thought this was some kind of joke, but the pictures are clearly showing that the glass cladding is being installed.

Unbelievable surprise

What specifically caused you to assume it was about to collapse?

The continuation of this project not only represents the stubbornness of the N. Korean regime but also its quality. Falling to pieces yet covering up with modern glasses.

So will the cladding consist of just the windows or will they be covering the concrete as well? Or at least painting it or something (which seems like it's be insane to do on such a large structure)?

I think it'd look much better if it was all covered in some reflective material, instead of just putting in windows...

I guess we'll see!
