Historical Hamedan by Gilgamesh

Hamedan is one of the most ancient parts of our civilization. Here are some of the pictures from around the province from my trip there this summer.

Part 1, Hamedan city

Hamedan has a population of half a million and is believed to be among the oldest Iranian cities and one of the oldest in the world dating back to 3000 BC.

Today's Hamedan is what is left of Ecbatana, the median capital (728–550 BCE) . Since then it has been the capital of several other empires which is why there are 207 sites of historical and cultural significance in this city.

I was only there for a day so I didn't have much time to take pictures. The city was very nice though, green with nice people too, I'd take it over any city in 'shomal' w/o doubt.

Entering the city

Shariati St

the shrine of Esther and Mardkhai (jewish) lies on one the end of Shariat street close to Emam sq

Entance to the tomb was free of charge. There was a jewish man taking care of the shrine, very nice man but he didn't want to be photographed for some reason. The shrine is visited by many pious iranian muslims for making "nazr" (some sort of wishes).

the original door of the shrine hasnt been changed. The caretaker said it was atleast 1500 years old.

first room inside

second room

this picture is taken from inside the third room, there wasn't anything there exept plastic chairs.

Bu Ali square

Tomb of Avicenna. The Iranian physician, philosopher, and scientist.
Also known as Pour Sina, Ebn-e-sina and Bouali. Hamedanis call him "bu eli" lol.
In Hamedan there are everything from shops to schools named after him.

This tomb was built in the 1950's and took 2 years to complete.

the garden, Great place

Inside the tomb

Bu Ali museum inside the tomb

Central parts of the City, taken from the roof:

A street close to Shire Sangi Park

The stone lion

The stone lion of Hamedan is believed to have been built by Alexander.
It used to have a twin and together they constituted the old gate of the city called the 'Lions Gate'.
The gates were demolished in 931 CE when the Deylamid dynasti took over the city.

Today, the Stone Lion of Hamedan sits in the middle of its own park in Hamedan
and it's actually not interesting at all unless you know the history behind it.

It's not being taken care of which is a shame and there is not any proper information board beside it either.

Gonbad Alavian

Nice details, but it's in a bad shape

underground floor

A neighbourhod called Hessar close to Baba taher's tomb. Very scary place lol.

Tomb of Baba Taher Ouryan,

A very nice place, esp inside the tomb but ofcourse nowhere near as nice as Bu alis tomb.

Inside

Ganjnameh

A green valley 5 km southwest of Hamadan, on the side of Alvand Mountain. The valley contains old inscription (Ganjnameh) and the waterfall of Ganjnameh. This was the best site of Hamedan IMO. It was getting dark and my digicam only takes blurry photos in the dark.

The Ganjameh waterfall

The Ganjnameh inscription. The inscription to the left was ordered by Darius I (521-485 BCE) and the one on the right was ordered by Xerxes I (485-65 BCE). Both sections have been carved in Old Persian, Neo-Babylonian and Neo-Elamite. They start with praise of God (Ahura Mazda) and describe the lineage and deeds of the two kings.

Part 2, Alisadr cave and nature of the province;

These pictures are taken on the road between Hamedan-Bahar-Asad abad-Alisadr (Qar Alisadr is east of Asad Abad).

Enjoy

Market

Alisadr Cave

Alisadr cave is 100 kms from Hamedan,it's 11 kms long and can be up to 40 meters high. It contains several large, deep lakes.
The cave has a river flowing through it and most travel through the cave is done with a boat.

The cave was originally discovered during the reign of Darius I (521-485 BC)
which can be verified by an old inscription at the entrance of the tunnel.
But the knowledge of the existence of the tunnel was lost, and only rediscovered in 1978 when a local shepherd followed the tunnel searching for a lost goat.

Entrance of the cave

On the first one there is some weird mist, I took the second picture just seconds after the first one and mist had disappeared.

Icicle looking...limestone??

rest are taken with my mobile

At the end of line 1, you'll have to climb all these stairs to reach a teahous.

the teahouse

then down again on the stairs on other side.

Begining of Line 2

My mobile ran out of batteries here

Part 3, Nahavand

Nahavand is in the southern most parts of this province. It's a typical small and ugly iranian town and nothing remarkable but it's surroundings has nice nature. The town was founded by the greek general Seleucus I Nicator (358 BC–281 BC). It's famous for the "battle of Nahavand" during the arab conquest of Iran.

streets

this is their bazar, they call it 'paghela'.

They have also have a mall lol

All in all, a hole and it got more attention that in it deserved, lol.

West of Nahavand, towards kermanshah

East, towards Arak/Tehran
