More International Airlines To Pakistan

KARACHI: German carrier Lufthansa is resuming direct flights between Karachi and Frankfurt from October 28, 2007, citing firm growth in number of passengers traveling from Pakistan.

According to a communique, the airline will operate three weekly flights from Frankfurt to Karachi and for the first time to Lahore as well.

“Lufthansa will connect Pakistan directly with Germany and with our global route network,” said Lufthansa’s Dr Karl-Rudolf Rupprecht, Head of Hub Management Frankfurt. “We expect a solid market growth in Pakistan and by that a further demand on this connection.”

These non-stop flights will shorten the air journey between the two countries by up to four hours compared with present stopovers in the Gulf region.

The announcement comes at a time when Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is trying to turn the two largest cities of the country into transit hubs for Asia-Pacific passengers going to Europe and beyond.

According to a senior CAA official, while Pakistan is witnessing a good growth in air traveling, the Asia-Pacific region will contribute the highest number of passengers to global traffic in the next five years.

He said the authorities want to give incentives for stopovers here by seeking investment in diverse range of facilities including world-class hotels, shopping malls and other airport allied infrastructure.

This will require giving point-to-point excess to airlines based in Western and Eastern hemispheres and CAA is in contact with a number of carriers in this regard, The News has learnt.

England’s British Airways will operate six flights to Pakistan from current three in its winter schedule and Singapore Airlines has also sought to double its three frequencies to Islamabad.

CAA is also in talks with Virgin Atlantic, China International and Midland Airways.

Aero Asia To Resume Flights

By Saad Hasan

KARACHI: The grounded private airliner Aero Asia is near arranging a fresh fleet of aircraft for the resumption of domestic flights in Pakistan, an official of the airline told The News on Friday.

Flight operations of Aero Asia, partly owned by England-based confectionary giant Regal Group, were restricted by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in May this year on concerns that its aircraft were unsafe for passengers.

“The Board of Directors will meet in Manchester next week to review and perhaps approve the induction of aircraft that we have cited,” said the airline official who asked not to be named.

“First, we will focus on shorter routes and slowly build up the capacity to operate on longer distances.”

Initially, three Jetstream-41 turboprop-powered 32 seaters would be operated on secondary routes, which connected the metropolises to smaller cities like Multan, Turbat and Dera Ghazi Khan, he said but did not give an exact date for the start of flights.

The directors, who are expected to meet next Tuesday, will also consider induction of three bigger aircraft, either Airbus 310s or Boeing 737s, for international flights, which will be resumed in the second phase.

However, the draft of a new aviation policy bounds an airline to own four airworthy aircraft to go abroad. Permanent induction of wet-leased aircraft, which are flown by pilots and crew of the lessor, has been disallowed under the policy.

It should be recalled that when CAA slapped restriction on Aero Asia it had three wet-leased aircraft being operated by foreign crew.

Khalil Ahmed, airline’s Executive Director, had told a press conference then that problems with the airline’s lessors had continued since Regal Group took over the defunct private carrier in June 2006 from the Tabanis.

“These problems have reached a stage where we find it difficult to continue operating their (lessors) aircraft till these problems were resolved,” he had said.

Virgin Atlantic & BMI Could Be Coming To Pakistan Soon!

BMI and Virgin Atlantic are seeking permission from Pakistan's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to launch passenger flights to the country, the Director General CAA, Farooq Rehmatullah, told local press.

Pakistan's CAA is trying to increase the number of international airlines operating flights to the country from 24 to 40 between 2008 and 2012. As part of that plan, Mr. Rehmatullah told the Daily Times newspaper that the CAA is negotiating with bmi and Virgin, along with China International Airlines, about launching passenger flights to the country.

In addition the CAA has allowed British Airways to extend its passenger flights between Heathrow and Islamabad from three times weekly to six flights a week from October this year, Mr. Rehmatullah said.

Etihad Daily From Karachi

KARACHI: Encouraged by high passenger growth, Etihad Airways has increased its frequency between Karachi and Abu Dhabi to 11 weekly flights and the airline now offers daily flights with effect from August 1, 2007.

With this increase one flight will operate four times a week on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, while another one will operate daily, the airline said in a press release.

Joost den Hartog, Etihad Airways’ Area Manager in Pakistan, said: “The additional flight from Karachi is an indication of how important the Pakistan market has become for the Etihad network in the past three years. The growth for Etihad over the past year has been especially strong: from four weekly flights in February 2006 to 28 flights and three additional cities.”

This flight is part of the Etihad Summer programme in which Pakistan gained five additional flights. The additional flights and changed flight times minimize connecting times to major European and North American destinations, the airline said.

Shaheen Air Resumes Flights To Muscat

Monday, August 06, 2007

MUSCAT, Oman: Shaheen Air, Pakistan’s private airline, has announced its decision to restart operations to Muscat. It will launch two direct flights to Lahore from August 10.

Shaheen Air will operate Boeing 737 aircraft, full economy class with 121-seat capacity on Mondays and Fridays. The departure from Muscat is scheduled at 0930 hours on Monday and at 1600 hours on Fridays.

Shaheen Air was taken over by the TAWA Group of Companies, Canada in June 2004 and since then Shaheen Air has expanded its fleet and acquired new routes, to facilitate air travel at a reasonable price.

Plans are also on to induct more aircraft and introduce more domestic flights linking smaller cities with major cities across Pakistan. The airline also plans to operate into Europe and the USA soon.

The international routes currently covered by Shaheen Air include five major Gulf points Kuwait, Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain with Muscat being an addition this year.

In 2007, Shaheen Air successfully introduced e-ticketing and online booking.

With a dynamic fare pricing structure offering more than 60-70 per cent discount for passengers booking and purchasing tickets well in advance, it gives an ideal opportunity to passengers to plan their trips in advance and enjoy huge savings.

PIA Leases Seven A320s

KARACHI, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has agreed to lease seven new Airbus A320-200 aircraft from Kuwait's Aviation Lease and Finance Co. (ALAFCO), the national flag carrier said on Friday.

The aircraft will replace PIA's Boeing 737-300 fleet, which has served the airline for more than 20 years, PIA said in a statement.

The deliveries are expected to start and be completed in 2009. PIA did not say how much the deal is worth.

The 146-seat planes will reduce the average age of PIA's fleet from 13 years to around 10. The airline has also recently replaced its Fokker fleet with ATR42-500s.

The deal comes as PIA tries to stem financial losses and recover from a ban in March on most of its aircraft from flying to the European Union on safety concerns.

The ban was lifted in June for specific 747s and A310s. The carrier's fleet of 777s remained authorised throughout.

PIA also plans to replace other aircraft, including A310s and 747s.
