Thx Nate. Yeah, from the Hilton. I took those shots last October. Those parking lots are now three big holes for the pavillions.

Back in the 80's I was so impressed with Dallas and Houston's skylines, but with a couple of exceptions there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of change in the past 20 years. Is there a new boom about to happen?

I think there is a big possibility for a building boom in Houston. One Park place is under construction downtown as well as a new park. Two other towers are being planed for Downtown. I really don't know enough about Dallas though to say.

HOUSTON-dense and tall. office vacancy is lowered so more scrapers are being proposed.
DALLAS-fairly tall and unique architecture. office vacancy way too high. no true skyscraper built in the central business district since 1987. this needs major improvement. AUSTIN-has improved quickly. should be really nice in about three years. SAN ANTONIO-needs new office towers. not dense or tall enough for a MSA of that size. FORT WORTH-Needs new towers. |

I dont agree with the people that think any Texas city is dense.. none of them are!! To me dense is New York City, Tokyo, etc...but Houston? Dallas? come on guys!!!! they are nowhere near "dense".

It's not fair to set the standard for density so high. NYC and Tokyo are two of the globe's greatest skylines. They are world cities, after all. I think it'd be better to say those two cities are "extremely dense," leaving room for the likes of Houston and Dallas to still be "dense." Otherwise, only a handful of cities in the world would be "dense."

you are right dbranham, but what Im trying to say is that taking into account the number of people living in those cities (around 5 million) you can even count de buildings/towers!! something dense, I assume, is something where you cannot exactly count them (lets not go to the extreme as NYC or Tokyo)...but there are so many cities that have barely 1 million people and they are trully dense. Let me show you 2 examples, those are cities in Argentina, I only have pics of Argentina at the moment, but cities like these are all over the world...I wonder why Houston and Dallas aren't really dense...
Hope everyone like sthe pics. Rosario city, Argentina (1,200,000 people) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Cordoba, Argentina (1,400,000 people). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

HEy yeah sorry those pics were to show what "dense" meant to me. I live in Houston and I would really like this city to be dense so it can be more urban... I personally like urban life...That way we wouldn't have to drive for HOURS in this city...why do you think Texas cities aren't dense? would you say its because people want to live in the suburbs even though they have to commute for like 2 hours each day? what's the deal? I read an article like two years ago that said that here in Houston people are wanting to come back to the "city" area to be close to their jobs and stuff...what do u all think?
cheers me |

Because Texas cities, like most other cities in the sunbelt, were built in the post WW2 era where the car is king. I think that if most of Houston was built before the age of the car, it would resemble that of Chicago or New York. I think we all hope Houston one day looks like the pictures you posted. But that will take some time. Alot of time at that.
