BIA might not be the biggest or the most modern airport, but it certainly is adding a classy flair to it. Rather than going for quantity, it is adding quality. An ayurvedic massage parlour, trendy speciality coffee bar etc way to go !

imagine opening up a tourism corridor between Goa/Kerala to the west and Thailand/Malaysia to the east via Colombo/Weearawila ? That would be fantastic. The more air connection ( preferably budget airlines ) to touristic destinations the better. Srilankan Airlines and perhaps Mihin Air need to plan expanding more on such routes to attract more tourists.

btw, we are also discussing other air routes/airlines plying to Sri Lanka in this thread. And with the launch of Mihin air we might be discussing more of that aswell. And I see this thread going on for a while, so how about a rename for this thread title which says 'The Srilankan Airlines Thread ' at the moment ?? something that is more inclusive of other airlines aswell ?? any suggestions ?

Space is really scarce for BIA so they must go for quality. Any suggestions on what would be a nice addition to BIA ? Rooftop Garden like Changi Maybe :P (I can dream can't I ?)

Since This was built during the Communist eras of 60s and early 70s it looks very cheap and worn out IMO. But IIRC they said they were going to work on the Exterior Facades and a new Access road to the upper areas or something like that.

Dont think so at this stage, unfortunantly.

BTW this thread could be renamed "The Sri Lankan Aviation thread" as suggested a while back

Yes you can dream indeed .. but I think a way has to be found to add another runway soon. Investing in better terminal wont get much returns unless a way can be found to increase usage. This means more flights, so a second runway. THen who knows, an all new terminal.

Yeah, But the problem is again space if i recall correctly. Since the Airport is right in the middle of an suburb and a FTZ people don't want to give up their land, and that means not enough space for a parallel runway and with the Air force base its a near impossibility without moving the base. There was a article a while back on this.

I had a question regarding sri lankan airlines, any cabin pics that ive seen show a cabin which is completely identical of Emirates older cabins, like the Emirates ageing 777-200s for example. However Emirates have moved on to much newer and better cabins like the ones they use on their A340-500s and their 777-300ERs, these include flatbed seats in business and much better seats and bigger PTVs in economy. On top of this Emirates have moved on to the new ICE entertainment system, whereby as far as i know Sri lankan still has the older system.

So does sri lankan have any plans of bringing their aircraft upto standard with Emirates?

By the way just live the livery of Srilan airlines planes...its absolutely brilliant!

Hasan, I think it's because SriLankan Airlines and Emirates are in a partnership and the contract is due to run out in 2008 (which is really close in airline terms). Since Emirates have the managing stake in SriLankan Airlines they are waiting for the contract to be renewed before they give the go ahead for any new purchases or refurbishments. Apparently one of the reasons the extension of the contract is being delayed is because some folks at SriLankan Airlines think that Emirates has too much control over the airline.

As for the livery, I wasn't too keen on it when it first came out, but its grown on me - I really like it now

UL should definitely be offering services to North America (Toronto, New York, LA) and Australia.

The expat communities there are huge... it's definitely worth the investment.

Anyway, the Government needs to upgrade CMB!! The new pier is great and all, but still a bit small and cheap-looking.
