MTA: 4/5/6/7 Subways Are Back! F/J/D/M Coming Later Today!

Quote:
For the first time since Hurricane Sandy touched down in the city at the start of the week, Manhattan and Brooklyn have been re-connected via the transit system. Gov. Andrew Cuomo and MTA Chairman Joe Lhota confirmed that the 4/5/6/7 subways are back in full service as of 10 a.m. this morning; and the F/J/D/M should be back sometime this afternoon. And as you can see from the flooded subway tunnel photos above, they had a lot of work to do to get to this point.

"I have never met people so dedicated and so much in love with what they do. New Yorkers should know that," Lhota said at the press conference. The 4 train is operating between Woodlawn in the Bronx and New Lots Avenue, Brooklyn—running express in Manhattan and local in Brooklyn. It's especially good news for Brooklyn Nets fans headed to tonight's home opener against the Toronto Raptors today.

The 5 is operating between Eastchester/Dyre Avenue in the Bronx and Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn; it's running express in Manhattan, and local in Brooklyn and the Bronx. The 6 train is operating between Pelham Bay Park and Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall as a local. And the 7 Line has been restored between Flushing-Main Street and 42 Street-Times Square.

Other updates on lines: the L train is flooded, wall to wall, ceiling to floor—it may be back sometime next week. The A train will begin service Monday morning, from Lefferts to 168th Street; and they're not sure when the C train might be back yet. And according to the Times, Lhota said the Q train is expected back this afternoon, and the 2/3 by tomorrow.

G Train Resumes Service, L Train Coming Back Soon: MTA

image hosted on flickr

The G train at 7th Avenue BUT FOR HOW MUCH LONGER?! by Scoboco, on Flickr

Quote:
According to the MTA, the G train started rolling again at 9 a.m. and the L, which is essentially out of service, could be back very soon! MTA officials say the G is running slowly but it is running again. As for the L—look at those pictures of the flooded 14th Street tunnel and you understand the delay. It is coming though. MTA chair Joe Lhota even says it could still come back as soon as today!

Talking to the Times, Lhota said:

Quote:
he was hopeful that the G would be restored by Wednesday. He said he would push to bring back L service on Wednesday, too, but acknowledged that this had “a lower probability of happening.”

"Those are two lines that have had not just water but an enormous amount of silt," Mr. Lhota said in a telephone interview.
Before the MTA can reopen lines they have to first pump the flooded tunnels and then painstakingly check all the parts, which takes time. On that topic, have you been wondering how the pumping itself works? Here, let New York's Robert Kolker explain:

Quote:
Pumping began soon after [the storm ended] — or “dewatering,” as the pumping industry calls it. Other city agencies had to rely on outside contractors to pump their tunnels. But it happens that the subway system already had its own toys. Each of the system’s under-river tunnels has a sump to deal with everyday seepage, and each also has a tube fixed to the side called a discharge line. Starting Tuesday, the system sent in its “pump trains” — diesel powered trains with five or six cars, run by just five or six workers. Underneath the trains are pumps, moving hundreds of gallons of water back into the river every minute. “You take the pump train and you bury the first car up to the floor level so it’s underwater,” Prendergast says, “and you hook it up to the discharge line and you start pumping the tunnel dry.”
Once the pumps are going, "It can take up to 100 hours to pump the largest tubes, fully loaded with water, or as little as five or six hours for those that are smaller or less fully flooded." So that is what the MTA has been doing with the L train's 14th Street tunnel and the G's tunnel through Newtown Creek.

Meanwhile, in other MTA news, the Coney Island terminal for the B, D, N and Q lines is still without power. The South Ferry 1 terminal is dry, but needs lots of repairs and is out of service. And workers are still cleaning up the debris at 168th Street on the A line. Having those terminals out though is part of why the system is running so slow—trains have to turn around elsewhere.

The L Train Is Running Again

image hosted on flickr

An L Train Incident by Idle Type, on Flickr

Quote:
The L is back in business! It's going to take a little while to get back to full service but rest assured the first trains to Manhattan since Hurricane Sandy are running. As MTA.info says: "L trains operate between 8 Avenue Station and Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway Station in both directions, making all local stops."

According to the MTA service "resumed through the 14th Street tube at 3 p.m. with 10 minute headways returning service to stations from 8th Avenue to Broadway Junction." The tube, you'll remember, was "flooded to a depth of 15 feet for its entire length of 3,400 feet."

"We continue to progress toward the complete restoration of service and will continue to do so incrementally, but only when it’s safe and doesn’t overcharge the system," MTA CEO Joe Lhota said. "However, much work remains to restore service in the Rockaways and along the Sea Beach Line in Brooklyn, which were devastated by Hurricane Sandy."

The subway system has fairly new trains, but the stations are such a dump. I really really hope the city can revamp the subway in the next two decades or so. It's really one of the worst and most outdated that I've used, and I've used many.

I'd settle for better room temperature in the stations (especially when the temperature difference with the A/C'ed rolling stock is awfully high like on summer). MBTA solved somehow by installing fans in some stations.

The biggest economy in the world is insolvent and only its creditors (China) keep it in the lifestyle it is accustomed. Unless the federal government cuts its spending it is doomed and will eventually slide further into third world status.

The MTA ought to look at the new trains the PATH has. Very nice to travel in.

NYC MTA can be a REAL disappointment sometimes. It's dirty and delays are common.

I can't get to Brooklyn from Queens without various transferring.
