India is doing pretty nice work in building new metros. Maybe it's not that fast and massive as in China, but still very impressiv

LES Subway Station Escalator Stops Working Hours After Debut

By Serena Solomon on February 21, 2014 11:25am

LOWER EAST SIDE — The East Broadway F subway station's long-awaited new escalator was forced to shut down early Friday morning due to an electrical issue, just hours after it was switched on.

Commuters Thursday night were greeted with the surprise of a working escalator at the station, after the MTA delayed the opening several times during 18 months of construction.

However, power to the escalator went down at about midnight, according to workers on the scene, leaving straphangers to walk up 81 steps from platform to street once again Friday morning.

"What kind of workmanship is that if it works for a day and it's out of service a few hours later?" asked George Brighwaite, 60.

"They gave us some jelly on bread last night, now it's just the bread."

Brighwaite, who lives two blocks from the station, said walking the three flights of stairs is exhausting.

"It wears on my body," he said, while calling the new escalator's look "charming."

MTA and Con Edison workers said the stoppage was due to an electrical issue. They said they hoped the issue would be resolved in the next few hours.

A spokesman for the MTA was not immediately available for comment. The escalator was still not working as of 10 a.m.

Other straphangers marveled at the beauty of the shiny new escalator with silver paneled handrails and bright white tiles.

"It's not working," said one woman, "but it's beautiful."

What will they do with the Astoria line when the Q train is switched to SAS? Will the N train be enough?

Would resurrecting the W train mean changing the N train to express in Manhattan to avoid double crossing at the scissors crossover south of Prince St. station?

I won't be surprised if these projects keep getting pushed back. Beyond 2020...quite possible.

It's just vaporware, all of it - Second Avenue Subway, East Side Access, etc.

?

The SAS will add much-needed capacity to the east side of Manhattan - even the short stretch currently under construction.

ESA will bring extra capacity to the entire LIRR system, provide a direct link to Grand Central from Long Island and will help relieve Penn Station.

Hardly my definition of vaporware...

Probably. The N was previously express in Manhattan.

An IT related product that never gets delivered and does not live up to its promises if eventually delivered anyway.

SAS is on schedule, not an IT project and I have no doubt it will live up to its promises. Too bad ESA has been postponed yet again, but there's no intention of cancelling the project nor any sign it will be postponed indefinitely - and not an IT project either.

Pretty nice! Would love to see the same sort of device on the trains themselves with automatic voiceover. Informing of stations ahead, weather currently, lines and waits for other stations, etc.
