Queer that a place where its streets (a) form a grid and (b) predominate as the names of its subway stations can't yield any graph-like map that neither puzzle nor dissatisfy most of its subway passengers, eh?

Map of the NYC subway is like English spelling, it gives you an idea how to pronounce a word, but not how to do it exactly. It would be too complex if it were to do that, so memorizing is necessary.

Might you instead mean Arabic, coz there's an awful lot of arithmetic displayed on their map, no matter the format?

How many New York metro stations are disabled-adapted?

Sneak Peek Inside the Fulton Center
June 4, 2014

When M. M. De Voe of Pen Parentis tweeted this morning that the Fulton Center’s doors were open, I hustled on over. The Fulton Center is the other transportation hub coming downtown, at the southeast corner of Broadway and Fulton; it’s where the A, C, J, Z, 2, 3, 4, and 5 subway lines meet. (And maybe one to be determined?) The upper floors—where most of the retail will be—have been hidden behind plastic sheets, but you can still get a good sense of the curviness inside

I took the escalators down but didn’t explore the subway platforms. Here’s the view back up toward the ground floor.

And then I went to Oren’s Daily Roast on William Street to get a coffee. As I walked along Fulton, I noticed again that the side doors were open, and you can get a decent peek inside—but with workers right inside, I didn’t feel comfortable attempting a better photo that this.

On the way back west, I saw that the paper in the windows didn’t go up very high. I don’t generally take photos through windows into unopened buildings, but what good is “generally” if you don’t explore the wiggle room it affords every now and then? The Fulton Center looks pretty amazing! Click to see it much bigger, and don’t mind my reflection….

The Fulton Center is scheduled to open June 26, but the shops and restaurants won’t be there for a few more months

It's weird how lousily connected some really close-by station are. For example there is no transfer between A/C/F and 2/3/4/5 in Downtown Brooklyn, but Jay St. and Borough Hall stations are only 200 m apart.

They were built by separate, rival companies. The A/C/F were built by the city, and the 2/3/4/5 were built by a private company (the IRT) and rival of the city's system.

Maybe I can start having a bit of faith in the MTA when Bowery and Chambers St (BMT) are cleaned up.

Fulton Street Transit Center opening delayed (again)
June 24, 2014 01:10PM

Fulton Street Transit Center rendering

Testing delays and unfinished elevators push back completion 60 to 90 days

The opening of Lower Manhattan’s soaring Fulton Street Transit Center, scheduled for this Thursday, has been pushed back an additional 60 to 90 days.

The megaproject is delayed thanks to testing delays and unfinished elevators, transit officials said during a Monday board meeting. Already years late and millions over budget, the hub will eventually link 11 different subway lines at six different stations, joining with the Port Authority’s World Trade Center Transportation Hub by 2016.

The MTA’s No. 7 train extension to the Far West Side of Manhattan is delayed as well, slowed by elevator issues and other problems at the 34th Street and Eleventh Avenue station. That project was scheduled to open by the end of this year, but will not be completed before February 2015 even with a newly accelerated timeline, engineering consultant Darlene Rivera told board members in the Monday meeting.

Engineers are also struggling to repair eight high-speed ventilation fans along the No. 7 line extension, according to the Times. The fans, which are designed to push hundreds of thousands of cubic feet of air per minute, currently are vibrating during tests — an issue officials are attempting to evaluate and correct.

A lot more than you think. Honestly, there is a LOT more that goes on with major capital construction projects than is up for public knowledge.
