Are trains actually ever made out of fiber glass/composite or do they just end up looking that way because of paint (e.g. plane livery)?

And do a lot of American transit agencies forgo paint for practicality, or is painting rolling stock actually some kind of composite material rather than steel/aluminium?

IMO on the second question: I think it's partly to save money, or just that creative public design is not a major part of public infrastructure projects as compared to Western Europe or Asia.

It's because of the immense urban decay that was allowed to happen, leading to graffiti which is a pain to get off when the rail cars are painted so the TA and later MTA have used bare stainless steel and aluminum as it allows them to remove the paint easier

Maybe...but then again, most of these trains come from European and Asian vendors...

I guess I'm just curious if there's an actual difference in materials that makes it less sensible to paint on metal rolling stock, or if it is just that they don't bother.

More durable trains in steel and more higienic in my opinion in Buenos Aires the new subways trains are in aluminum too.

Thank you all for your answers. As I can see, almost all the trains look the same.

Yes , with the exception of the newer ones having more tech and auto announcements...

Not really. There's a series of families of equipment.

Here's what is currently running:

Here's what used to run:

This website is very useful for all sorts of facts about the NYC subway, and others too!

Newer Subway announcements to reduce dwell times at stations...I think they sound horrible...
