Airtrain tracks are much more quiet than those old elevateds, after all.

We're talking only, what, a single block extension of residential area? Rebuilding a few blocks at the end of the BMT Astoria line is surely cheaper than building a whole new train to Flushing.
Especially since those NIMBYs have been living with the metal structure for decades (anything up to Astoria/Ditmars Blvd). An elevated line with today's concrete guideway and sound-absorbing rail bedding would make the impact barely noticeable.
Their protest is a joke either way given they live right under the approach path for runway 04

New York CBTC contracts approved
28 Jul 2015

USA: New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority has approved two contracts for the installation of communications-based train control on the Queens Boulevard Line of the New York Subway.

The two 67-month contracts are for Siemens Industry Inc ($156·2m) and Thales Transport & Security ($49·6m), currently the only two suppliers qualified by the MTA for CBTC projects. A separate $1·2m contract is to be awarded to Mitsubishi Electric Power Products Inc to develop and test CBTC, with the aim of qualifying as an additional supplier for future projects. All three contracts are being fully funded by the MTA.

Under QBL West Phase 1, CBTC is to be installed on local and express tracks serving the E, F, M and R lines from east of Kew Gardens/Union Turnpike station to north of 47-50 Streets/Rockefeller Center station and south of 50 Street station

Quick question, how much of the NYC Subway is actually underground? I never really thought about much of it being in the open.

London Underground (the dark bits are in tunnels)

Wikipedia has the answer.

It provides an answer at least if you're looking for a map comparable to the London one.

It's a bit less in London's case to be honnest. The majority of the NYC subway is underground, which is not the case of the London underground.

Here are maps to give an idea.

The oldest cars in the subway, the R32, will be sticking around until 2022.

http://www.subchat.com/read.asp?Id=1362299

R32 were first delivered in 1964 and are mostly used on the C train.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/26/ny...wait.html?_r=0

It was earlier thought they would run through 2017.

LOL , yikes.... They seem to want to keep the R160s on the C and R and use the 32's on the J/Z line...
