Plenty of pics of old rolling stock in special service not being too crowded. Including R1 #100. I know I would get on it if I saw it roll in regardless of which service it was running.

This event was more historic and important than that, not in small part because it was a one time thing where technically they could pull out some old trains any time they wanted.

I was wondering, It would be possible that NY implements a half-cent or one-cent or whatever extra tax ( a la L.A. or Denver) in order to finance the needed extensions and upgrades of the subway and other transit systems?

I never heard of something like that, but since New York is the city of the US that most rely on transit it could make sense. Or maybe such tax already exist and is barely enough to pay for maintenance of the existing system? (obviuosly, since the system is much bigger, a bigger percentage of the current taxes must go to the transit system than in every other city in the US)

http://www1.nyc.gov/nyc-resources/se...2389/sales-tax

The total sales and use tax rate in New York City is 8.875%.

This includes:

New York City local sales and use tax rate of 4.5%
New York State sales and use tax rate of 4%
Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District surcharge of 0.375%

I think it's a good idea, even if only a bump up to an even 9%. But I'm sure there's some long-winded explanation why it's not.

Chaos accompanied the release of a 1967 Vignelli map showing new subway lines on a color-coded diagrammatic map, a new scheme that was jarring in part because it was not accompanied by a visual overhaul of the system's cars and stations. (Courtesy Peter Lloyd)

Humm..I was around in 1967 and spent the summer in New York with my mom.. I don't remember any chaos over the color coded subway maps..I really don't. Of course I was just a teen ager. If you know where you are going or have a general idea you'd be ok.

Back then in 1967 at age 13 I rode on the subway by myself frequently...and just for fun..

I think the scene in the photo is totally unrelated to the so-called 'subway map chaos'...either it's some incident lost to history, or it might have been related to the opening of the Chrystie St. Connection, also in '67. That entailed a lot of changes to service between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Changing decades-old subway service patterns overnight might cause some confusion to some...

The overhead sign seems to start with 'LONG'. There's only one station of which the name starts with LONG afaik, however, and that's Longwood Avenue. Not affected by the Chrystie St changes and the station doesn't look like the one in the picture. So maybe it's not a station sign at all, but a directional sign (Long Island Railroad or LIRR? or 'Long trains'?). Station tiling looks IND to me.

Twould be an honor if you were criticized by the one inspired you like a teacher to student. Any full story between Vignelli and Jabbour mentioned (but unlinked) in the interview?
