New electronic strip maps are coming to the <2> and <5> trains. The maps combine the diagrams for both lines.

Any insight as to whether this is part of a broader/ongoing effort, or is it only happening at a few, strategic locations?

I believe its part of an ongoing effort to overhaul the line.

New York City To Test Open ‘Gangway’ Subway Cars

February 15th, 2016 by Kyle Park Points

New York City‘s subway system is set to test a new style of train for action by 2020 according to a New York Times article. In cities such as Paris and Toronto, subway riders are welcome to move between cars during transit without having to pass through doors or exit the car itself, and NYC plans on following the trend – or at least testing the waters. Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) has ordered ten ‘open gangway’ style cars that are connected without interruption – flowing cabins without doors or space between cars.

Rendering of MTA Open Gangway Plan; Source NY Times

As it stands, it is technically illegal to pass between New York City subway cars while the train is in motion and, though this seldom discourages the experienced traveler, is considered dangerous and disruptive. To properly switch cars, one must wait until the train is halted and dart to the next car via the subway platform.
The new style of car will in theory remedy many ailments such as overcrowding and the ‘bump and go traffic’ of people departing and boarding cars. For instance, with all the cars connected, passengers can board the same car and easily disperse along the line. Gone would be the days of everyone trying to pass through the same three doors to exit a crowded cabin or load into the most convenient car. With riders more easily dispersed and more evenly portioned, the trains should run a smoother schedule. The cars will also have an increased capacity.

NYC subway system to upgrade electronic maps on two lines

by Transportation Infrastructure News Daily Reports | Monday, Feb 15, 2016 @ 2:37pm

Contributed photo

Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) New York City Transit said late last week that it plans to replace the electronic strip maps on subway cars on the No. 2 and No. 5 Lines to supply more accurate and easily accessible information for riders.

Currently, the subway lines have strip maps with only information about the individual lines and not the overall subway system.

The new maps will allow riders to see where their subway car is heading if there are changes in subway service. The maps combine data from the No. 2 and No. 5 Lines, but illuminate only the routes in use. The existing maps show route data for either line.

The additions will be made to the R142 and R142A fleets.

Man those R32s are a museum piece. If they survive this next order with the R179s, won't they basically outlive all the 70s stock other than the SIR? And if they survive all the way to the 2020s with the 211s won't that be about the last of the 80s rolling stock too? No more Jane Fonda-approved orange and yellow bowling alley seats by that order?

The deciding factor on their lifespan will probably be the motors. The supply chain for those things has to be long-dead. And they just won't have the acceleration of newer cars, which means that they will start to hold up traffic more and more. After a certain point, the R32 will simply be an operational impediment and need to be retired.

MTA Advances Work On Second Avenue Subway Service

Quote:
For those who miss the train...

The onderful letter may be coming back. In fact, MTA New York City Transit is proposing to hold a public hearing on the possibility of restoring the Line in Queens and Manhattan this fall, in order to allow the Line to begin serving the Second Avenue Subway between 63rd and 96th streets when it opens later this year.

The Second Avenue Subway’s first phase will serve the existing Line station at Lexington Av/63 St as well as three new stations at 72 St, 86 St and 96 St., integrating them as one system into the existing subway network – an unprecedented accomplishment in the MTA’s modern existence.

MTA Capital Construction will also award final contract modifications on work for the first phase in line with the established budget for the project. Both measures will be presented to the MTA Board for approval at public meetings next week.“With every day’s work on the Second Avenue Subway, the MTA gets closer to fulfilling a promise first made to New Yorkers in 1929,” said MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast.

“Opening the Second Avenue Subway will provide new options for our customers and relieve congestion on Lexington Avenue trains.”

Finally, BMT will extend its services beyond 60 St.
Should SAS be classified as BMT or IND?

MTA Confirms W Train is Coming Back

By Jose Martinez
Updated Friday, February 19, 2016 at 10:23 PM EST

The last stop for the W train came in 2010. But on Friday, the MTA announced plans to bring back the local line that once stretched from western Queens to the southern tip of Manhattan.

"I was kind of confused when they got rid of it, so it's nice that they're bringing it back," said one commuter.

"Options are good," said another.

W trains ran weekdays between Astoria in Queens and the Whitehall station in lower Manhattan before falling victim to budget cuts.
When the W disappeared, riders in Queens could still take Q train into Manhattan. But the northern end of the Q line is about to be moved to the new Second Avenue subway line that's opening in Manhattan.

"We had to reroute the Q for service up to Second Avenue," said MTA spokesperson Kevin Ortiz. "But at the same time, we could not decrease the amount of service that we were providing our customers in Astoria. So we had to bring back the W."

I figure even though the official retirement order keeps getting pushed back, there will be an emergency order when it really starts hitting the fan with delays. It will be cool if they last till 2022 or 2025 or 2525 or whenever the 211s finally come in.
