but, unless you are going to either
1) build a load of new subway lines in the outer boroughs, or
2) evict service to other trunks from the lines that already exist there
you don't need lots of connections.

Random thought: Why not run the R through the 63rd St Tunnel?

Capital being the operative word, here.

The rats don't really bother me much...they almost always can be found in these systems, whether you ever see them or not.

The question for me is why the city never adequately directed significant capital towards the subway - historically, one can draw conclusions for the lack of investment during the 70s-00s, but by now there's an opportunity to imitate some of the funding initiatives seen in LA, Seattle, Atlanta, Phoenix, etc.

The limited station modernization pilot in the current (next?) capital plan offers some hope.

Though, it of course all comes down to Albany's whims, and time will tell just how boldly the city might pursue such measures - up to and including taking the MTA off of Albany's hands.

I give devolution (and, hopefully, consolidation of operations) a mild shot at happening within 5 years depending on how tightly the governor will work to maintain his grip.

It obviously needs to happen...it's still wild to me that no one has ever thought to plan for eventual blending of all commuter RR service/operations. That's what's fairly embarrassing.

I presume 2 trains will be turning via the loop used by 5 trains until New SF opens?

On a side note, how would the shuttle be reactivated - cleaning up and reopening the platform at Bowling Green seems like a lot of trouble just for this one reroute...

Also, speaking of shuttles, why not run a single track shuttle between Clark and Nevins to serve Hoyt and Clark Sts?

Anyway, was watching some videos of the W relaying at Whitehall St...

Are conductors allowed to open doors on both sides of the train at one go? Because it looks like opening one side of the train at a time seems rather counterproductive...

Yes, the 7 train does this ALL the time at Flushing Main St.

EDIT: you can have both sides open at once, but you cannot open both sides at the same time.

I take the RW from Whitehall somewhat frequently. Usually what they do when the W gets there is they open one side on the Brooklyn-bound platform to let the people off that were traveling downtown. Then after that they open the doors on the Queens-bound platform side to let the new people on that are heading Uptown/Queens

This is to ensure that the people are let off the train first! It's not counterproductive. It's actually efficient. There's also usually a few minutes of layover time at the terminal so there's no rush for the Queens-bound side to open right away.
