Yet ANOTHER derailment on the subway today.... It's sad that it's almost not newsworthy anymore at this point.

https://www.google.com/amp/abcnews.g...ubway-48779007

The Q train in Brooklyn this time. Not as bad as the one in Harlem, at least.

The B train in Brooklyn this time. Not as bad as the one in Harlem, at least.
It was a Q, and I'd rather wait until we know the cause before passing judgement.

For all we know heat related. And no around of inspection could have prevented it.

I admire your patience, because I'm getting kinda fed up with all this. Not just the subway, but everything.

I have patience for a few reasons.

The first is that I know that it has been 10 times worse. My father doesn't complain because he's lived it. Those dark days of the late 70s and early 80s.

Secondly, I know that the problem is governmental in nature. The MTA can only do with the resources given to them. And if the government doesn't want to deal wit it, how can they get better? It takes money no matter how much restructuring and waste cutting you do. If you don't get the money, then we are still where we are yesterday.

Lastly, I know I don't pay a lot of money for my service. $2.75 to go from parts of Westchester or Nassau County to any part of the city with a single free transfer? Unheard of in most parts of the world. I also know that fare doesn't even cover half the needed daily running costs for the system. While higher than other flat-fare systems due to the fact our city was build around transit, it still ain't enough. But we have it good fare wise.

While I tend to agree, generally, it's also true that the MTA is very bad at managing capital projects as well as just service/operations planning, in certain respects.

Much of the latter stems from not having enough funding, but the former stems from not using the funding they get efficiently.

It's really getting to the point where they're gonna have to start shutting down entire - or large sections of - lines to upgrade infrastructure...They can't keep muddling through.

I remember there was a proposal to relocate the Canarsie Line to the Bay Ridge Branch ROW?

Are there any plans to extend the 7 line south of Hudson yards?

There is no question we are nearing the end of 24/7 service.

On any given night, 75% of the system is shut down, so it's not that much of a leap to 100%.

That sounds bold somehow, because the 24/7 service seems to be a big bragging right for some reason, beyond the literal usefulness of the trips it serves,
and more to the point of NYC being known as the city that never sleeps.

Is this something that's seriously being considered?

While I'm sympathetic to both sides, unfortunately, catering to lower-income riders is really taking its toll on the system. NYC can't move to distance-based fares because it would disadvantage lower-income riders the most as they live farthest from the city center and shutting down the subway on weekday nights disadvantages night shift workers, who again tend to be lower-income.

In the end there's really no good solution to the issue.

But every other metro of similar size (except Moscow) has distance-based fares and shuts down at night.
