Yep, it might be for statistical purposes only.

I always thought it was some sort of fraud/theft prevention measure tied to the cardholder's information. If you're allowed to just punch in any ZIP code then that'll save me from having to run in to pay for my gas.

I had read not too long ago that the MTA has a TON of data off of the Metrocard (not sure if they sell it or not to anyone), such as where costumers are from, travel patterns, etc. So it's most likely for statistical purposes.

It happened during Irene too. It is a safety precaution to protect residents, visitors, employees, and equipment.

For a storm of this magnitude, with the huge possibility of storm surge going straight into the Hudson. I think the right decisions were made here.

EWR and JFK should be closed as well. There aren't any seats available from EU to USA for tomorrow.

I'd say they are practically closed too. All flights to the northeast are cancelled.

Windiness aside, I'd be fascinated discovering how all those usually-busy concourses there must sound in their silent glory ...

It will take up to four days to get flood water out of NY subway tunnels, a Metro Transit Authority spokesman says via CNN.
