Hong Kong Hair style

I've noticed in the recent years that the "Asian hair style" has become increasingy popular with youths in Japan, Korea, mainland China, and HK for males. The style seems to be popularized by celebs and singers.

I've just got one question, how do you get your to look like that??
Using regular gel with get you the typical "wet and shiny" but the "asian" style tends to be more soft, dry, and flows more naturally. Anyone know how its done?? Do you use a special kind of gel or hairspray or something like that or if you need to get it done professionally by salons? It would be much appreciated.

Examples from HK celebs:

Leo Ku

Lee Hacken

Jay Chou

Hehe. Jay Chou is from Taiwan, not Hong Kong. But to get your hair to look like that requires a lot of time and a ridiculous (for normal people) amount of money spent at the stylist studio every day.

The hair is perfected just for one event or photo shoot. I don't think it can stay like that for very long.

That's all I know. Please add clarifications/corrections!

I guess this is achievable using gel.

Put gel in hand.
Take hand and put on head.
Move your hand rapidly in random directions.
Done.

Well my hair is similar to that where the hair goes from left to right and spiked up on certain areas mid length on the back and short on the left side. Well first thing is you need to go to hair salons to achieve that in HK its cheap to get those styles but here in Los Angeles I have to go to those trendy HK hair salons because they know what I'm talking about and it cost me US$45. After that all you need is hair putty, that looks just like clay. Rub it onto your hands and spread it gently on the top layer of your hair after distributing the clay all over your hair then move it to the direction you want. Then put some more putty mix with very little gel on your fingertips and pull it to the direction you want your hair facing to create the mid spike effect..TADA!

That's the trend for most HK Chinese. But for us minorities, it's different

Just blow dry it well after showering and it will be easy to shape with gel. It's been working wonders for me this week .. a new style every day.

I prefer mine semi shaved like at least 2-3 inches. At least I don't have to use those gels or wax

We've seen too much male hairstyle, how about the ladies

My favorite is still the conversative long flowing hairstyle just like most women that I see in Central. But some youths sport the messy mop style.

Ladies' hairstyles vary much more than the men, which makes sense since they have much more volume to go with. That's why it costs more for ladies to get a hair cut at the salon than men.

Maggie Cheung's style is not so representative of Hong Kong's contemporary pop scene anymore. Her style is more internationalized now that she's a global film star.

Anyone remember the hideous girlish hairstyles from some of the Taiwanese F4 troupe?
