^ Double that. But these won't exactly be postcard material. Unless it looks better once completed.

Well, I prefer the good master plan rather than the building's typical form.

Good, but forgettable.

At first when I read the title I thought they were building some hideous thing like that tower in ... (Kaoshiung? I'm not sure)

This is in the central core of Taipei, a district that's very traditional in its development style. 101 is off in a special office district in the east, several blocks of large, western-style developments that have a much more spacious environment than the crowded urban centers.

In terms of skyline, it's not near enough to 101 to have an appreciable impact.

TAIPEI | Gate of Taipei | 319m | 76fl | 239m | 56 fl | APP

Height: 318.5m / 239.3m
Floors: 76 / 56
Architect: Fumihiko Maki
Developer: CECI

Notes:
Advertising Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki has been chosen by a Taiwan consortium to design the Taipei Twin Tower, a new landmark for the capital city scheduled to be launched in 2011, a city official said.

Maki, 77, has been named by the China Engineering Consultants Inc (CECI) to design the Taipei Twin Tower, part of the urban renewal plan involving expanding the Taipei Railway Station and developing surrounding areas, Lee Shang-jui, from the Taipei city government's Department of Rapid Transit System (DORTS), told reporters.

"The Taipei Railway Station will be rebuilt so that it can link up with the high-speed railway and the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line linking the Taipei Railway Station and the Taiwan Tao-yuan International Airport," Lee said.

"In 2011, foreigners arriving at the Taiwan Tao-yuan International Airport will take the MRT line to the Taipei Railway Station, and see the Taipei Twin Tower when they come out of the Taipei Railway Station," he said.

The Taipei Twin Tower will be two matchbox-shaped commercial complexes -- one 318.5m tall with 76 stories, and the other 239.3m tall with 56 stories.

They will stand west of the new Taipei Railway Station which Maki will also design. Maki has called his design the "Gate of Taipei."

On completion, the Taipei Twin Tower will become Taiwan's 3nd tallest building after the 508m Taipei 101 and the 347.5m Tuntex Sky Tower in Kaohsiung.

Too spread out tho, Taipei should figure out if it wants Xinyi or Zhongzheng District to be its CBD.

Urban Makeover Creating a New Look — Land Development on the Taipei Main Station District Parcel C1, D1, and T9

The unbalanced development of eastern and western Taipei is similar to that of northern and southern Taiwan. A lot of differences in construction status exist, such as transportation construction, land and property rights, and land utilization. In human terms, negative differences in cultural images, socio-economic activities, and population growth also exist.

To balance the development in eastern and western Taipei, the Taipei City government had insisted on locating Taipei Station on the Taipei Main Station District Parcel C1 and the eastern part of Parcel D1 since the central government’s early plan of constructing the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Access MRT System. And, relevant land development on Parcel C1, D1, and T9 was also planned. It is hoped that the combination of the Taipei MRT construction, improved land use and development in western Taipei will generate a makeover of urban development in Taipei City.
