Bangkok's new airport to beef up security

BANGKOK, Oct 13, 2006 (AFP) - Bangkok's new international airport, which opened three weeks ago, will install an additional 200 closed-circuit cameras to beef up security against terror attacks, an official said Friday.

Transport Minister Thira Haocharoen, who was sworn in Monday as part of a military-backed government after last month's coup, made the announcement after inspecting security operations at Suvarnabhumi airport.

"Amid global fears over terror attacks, we found security checks at Suvarnabhumi airport were not strict enough," said Chaisak Angsuwan, director-general of the aviation department at the Transportation Ministry.

"For example, if visitors wear police or government uniforms, they can enter restricted areas without being checked thoroughly. We must enforce strict ID checks to make sure no terrorists can mingle with airport staff," he said.

The airport, located 25 kilometres (15 miles) east of Bangkok, already has thousands of security officials and 700 closed-circuit cameras.

Suvarnabhumi, which means "Golden Land" in the Thai language, operates 24 hours a day and has an annual passenger capacity of 45 million.

The airport replaced the creaking Don Muang, which had handled about 37 million passengers per year -- two million more than it was designed for.

In April last year, suspected Islamic militants bombed Thailand's Hat Yai airport in the Muslim-majority restive south, killing two people.

THAI Requests Passengers to Check-In to International Flights 3 Hours in Advance

Thai Airways International Public Company Limited requests the assistance of passengers flying out of Suvarnabhumi Airport, to check-in 3 hours in advance for international and domestic flights, in order to decrease traffic jams routed to and from the airport.

Flg. Off. Apinan Sumanaseni, THAI’s President, said that following the official opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport on 28 September 2006, there have been several people coming out to the airport who are both passengers and observing public, both inside and outside the airport terminal area. This has resulted in traffic congestion on the roads within the airport area. Therefore, the company requests the assistance of passengers traveling both THAI's international and domestic flights to check-in 3 hours before actual departure time

Passengers flying with THAI may check-in to flights at SuvarnabhumiAirporton the 4th Floor, as follows:

Gate 1: Passengers flying Royal First Class and Royal Silk Class for international flights may check-in at Counter Rows A and B
Gate 2: Passengers flying Royal Silk Class and Economy Class for domestic flights may check-in at Counter Row C
Gate 4: Passengers flying Economy Class for international flights may check-in at Counter Rows H and J

Authorities consider airport expansion

(dpa) - The Department of Aviation is looking to expand Bangkok's newly opened Suvarnabhumi International Airport to accommodate the rapid growth of passenger traffic, the head of the department said Monday.

Less than a month after its September 28 opening, Suvarnabhumi is nearing full capacity and the expansion is needed because of a projected 10 per cent growth per year in traffic, Department of Aviation Director-General Chaisak Angkasuwan said.

Some international carriers have applied to increase their number of flights from the end of October when the high tourist season starts, Chaisak told reporters.

He said he will suggest the responsible government agencies speed up the feasibility study to build a new passenger terminal for low-cost carriers and a third runway.

Four runways are eventually planned for Suvarnabhumi and the need for them is the major reason the city's airport was moved from Don Muang, where there was no space for expansion.

Meanwhile, Thai Airways International (THAI) should have all the problems plagueing the move to Suvarnabhumi resolved by early November, THAI President Apinan Sumanaseni said Sunday.

The national flag carrier, which operates more than 200 flights a day at Suvarnabhumi, has made steady progress dealing with the problems, particularly glitches with the baggage handling system, he said.

From the pics, it just needs to have a few more ingredients to looks brilliantly beautiful.

The number one action is putting plants, and flowers, greenery etc, inside the terminal!!
