True, here is where the Student flats by Corp fall over. I saw a lovely little unit underneath, which I thought was a bar. Its the lobby

Had a look at the Fitzwilliam building yesterday. Like Larven said, it's a shame the balconies were squared off - they've definitely lost something.

Overall it's better I thought it was going to be, but there are a couple of things I don't get. Why the brick on the back wall of the balconies? I think it's one material too many - more white render would have been crisper and more elegant. There's already rough stone, metal, render, glass and wood. I think the brick is tipping it into mish-mash territory. The second query was about the stone wall outside. If the council are looking to build a unified urban square using all four corners, I'd have thought it would make more sense to leave each quarter relatively open and maybe reduce the road width to not allow two cars to pass (if they want to pinch a bit more space for pedestrians). I guess it's hard to judge the open space just yet though.

The trees are very nice though. On that point, all of the super heavy standards that have been planted on the new inner ring road, Howard St. Eyre St. etc. are looking absolutely great just now. They're already making a big impact, imagine what they'll be like in a few years. Well done SCC and the developers.

The council would only allow us to use render on the lower wing and there was a requirement to use red brick, which as anyone who has followed the Sheffield forum for the last few years will know they absolutely love! Unfortunately its not the nicest red brick out there and I agree that its one material too many. When Merlin Estates bought the site after we had already secured planning permission we had little say in what materials were used other than offering "aesthetic" guidance, to a large extent they negotiated through us with the planners when they wanted to change the materials. We also think it is better than we thought it was going to be under the circumstances outlined above, Unisol's trees make a positive contribution too!

Thanks Larven. Is there anything positive we can do in future? Can we object if the council insists on bloody red bricks?

Am I right in thinking those trees, elegant as they are, have been planted in the area that was supposed to provide visibility splays for motorists, or am I thinking of some other scheme?

Which are the other three corners planned to be used? Is the plan effectively to have an opn space spanning Fitzwilliam Street?

The site is on a crossroads, so presumably it's the other three corners as well. I hadn't heard about this until Larven mentioned it.

Yea, that's what I thought. But Fitzwilliam Street is a fairly major route - are they going to pedestrianise it? (Part of NRQ?)

Nah, I dont think they will. I think they just want to open up the junction a bit more.

So much for maintaining a degree of anonymity....lol. I'm sure it will surprise no one to hear that "bersamim" works for Axis.

Pretty much, once you get the other 3 corner sites redeveloped with the building lines stepped back in the manner of our scheme. I would have thought when the ground floor commercial units becomed occupied and the landscaping goes in it will probably be a nice little urban space.

Already worked that out.

Now that we know who both of you work for, either of you want to leak about any exciting projects lined up for Sheffield? (If there are any)

Of course there are some new and exciting projects lined up for the city, were going to be updating our website soon with some of the new stuff we've been working on this past year or so. Of course there's only so much we, and indeed bersamim can reveal for reasons of confidentiality etc.
