The ones down near the Niche on Sidney street seem to have gone up quick.

The ones just off Shoreham street are rising too.

Also what is happening on Mary Street, there is scaffolding around this old building next to the new flats on the corner.

I notice on the student flats (The avil i think its called), where the red crane is, are simply boxes put together and on top of each other, then cladded, with all the room pre-made off site. Thats why this was has shot up so fast.

they've just built one like that round the corner from me in coventry. it's a Unite one and, while it was impressive how fast it went up, the end result looks dreadful. loads of brick, loads of wriggly tin roofing and some hideous banana coloured claddding. that's right, banana coloured cladding.

actually, it looks awfully similar to the roscoe road proposal on the previous page. watch out, banana may be coming to sheffield!

Ye the Anvil (or what ever its cllaed) is owned by Unite, I liked in a Unite place last year and that was built about 5 or 6 years ago, so I think it wasnt just box rooms, as each room has slightly different features, and it just looked like a (cheaply done) building inside. But the new unite buildings look like boxes inside, my mate lives at one that opened last year and the bathroom is a plasic room, similar to what you see on a train, with everything made before it gets to site.

Flats get plan to get go-ahead

THIS is the sleek new apartments and office building that could rise near Bramall Lane in Sheffield if councillors give the scheme their seal of approval next week.
The £30 million development, on Denby Street, Sharrow, is proposed as a mixture of more than 200 "crash pad studio" apartments, compact one bedroom flats, spacious one and two beds, and penthouses with large terraces.

There would be 18,000 square feet of office space as well as parking for more than 100 cars.

The proposed building, which falls in the newly-designated John Street Conservation Area, would range from four to seven storeys in height.

Planning officers at next week's City Centre, South and East Planning and Highways Area Board meeting are recommending approval of the scheme, and work could start this summer. But some critics have expressed doubts about the scheme.

Green Party councillor Jillian Creasy sa id one of the main businesses in the area was the recording industry and complaints about noise from bands had already forced the closure of the Kenilworth Works.

And The Little Sheffield Development Trust added that no studies on the effects of noise from match day crowds at Bramall Lane
appeared to have been done.

The plans have been submitted by Blisco Ltd, led by entrepreneur developer Duncan Stokes, from Dore. The site is made up of a former nursery school which he bought from the council, and a car sales lot next door.

Duncan, an architecture graduate, said: "It is very unusual and appealing to have a stand-alone level site in Sheffield on a main arterial route into the city. The site is also lined on one side with mature trees.

"Residential and commercial development will bring more vibrancy to the area both in the day time and the evening.

"I feel this site is on the 'right' side of town for both easy access into the city and also out to the Peak District."

Recommending approval, officers said: "The development will result in a significant improvement in the appearance of this part of the Conservation Area, and will further enhance this positive area."

Me to, from the sounds of it though the council wanted the developers to take the height down to 6 floors. Hopefully they wont do this.

Incidently the Copthorne Hotel has gone down from 10 to 8 stories but gaining an extra 10 rooms!?!?

They do look really smart. As someone said earlier, this area is really starting to pick up.

1 ) How the fuck are they getting planning permission for

Quote:
is proposed as a mixture of more than 200 "crash pad studio" apartments, compact one bedroom flats, spacious one and two beds, and penthouses with large terraces.

There would be 18,000 square feet of office space as well as parking for more than 100 cars.
A development with a fraction of the parking it really requires? With 200 apartments I would demand at least 200 car spaces, not counting the amount that would be essential for the offices.

Also
2 ) are they keeping the building line right back from the road like the rest of bramall lane? Apart from the remaining old pubs, I understand the building line has been protected for decades because they were originally planning for a dual carriageway brammall lane, and recently in the recent decade this has been a proposed supertram route.
Even the Forge next door has a large lawn in front of it wide enough for a full supertram route.

Nice i like the look of these. The Sportsman will have apartments around it and across from it now!!

I agree with what muddycoffee said though about the tram, surely they should leave a bit of room for it.

I imagine the council love this! Less spaces than required! It means they can try and force more people out of their cars and onto useless public transport.

Well My g/f lives about a mile away in sharrow and when there is a match at Bramall lane you can't park. Without parking provision these people are going to really struggle at this location.

I agree. But when has common sense ever raised it's head in the council's war against the demon car!

There will always be those who don't use a car though, so maybe the developers are counting on those buying.

These do look nice though it has to be said. Not my cup of tea though with all the hassle that the football ground will bring.

The council is building a dual carriageway across the north of the city centre including sections which go right around the outskirts of a conservation area, underneath a listed archway and across a scenic river in two places. It will also be home to an 8 lane wide M1 in the not too distant future.

The council is trying to reduce car journeys and has certainly made some dubious transport planning decisions in the past, but I'm sick to death of hearing the same old one-sided "the council hates cars and never does anything for them" argument.

Andrew C,
I agree with you, "the council hates cars" is a lazy accusation which is bandied about far to liberally by people who don't have the sense to regognise that a transport system has to have winners and losers. And you can't just build more and more roads everywhere.
Within the town centre there are several enormous car parks in the planning or building. The one rising next to the Roebuck Tavern is the equivalent of a ten story office block in height, so it will accomodate a vast amount of cars, thousands!

I have been to many cities in europe where they have wonderful transport systems, Prague, Berlin, Amsterdam, Madrid, Barcelona, Krakow, Budapest etc.. Most of them have bigger and more dense populations than sheffield, and some of them you would be crazy to try to drive through because the driving is chaotic.
Sheffield is a strange place with narrow streets and lots of hills, while we all look forward to a day when the supertram could cover greater parts of the city, realistically it could take 20 years, by which time we could have a population of 1 million people, congestion charging, an elected mayor and the world superpowers will be India and China.

Thanks, but I have given up on the SF nowadays. Here I have copied this from another post.

I don't go on the Sheffield forum any longer,
Instead I use Shffield chat. http://sheffieldchat.forumup.co.uk/
Where all the old posters from the sheffield forum have gone,
Kirky, Owdlad, Epson, amere, Slh,etc.. and you can take the piss and swear, it is much more fun. We also have an uploading facility so it is really easy to put pictures up on threads.
You have to log in to view though because we are sick of spies, snitching to JoeP..

Anything goes on there apart from racism. It is like SF when it was good!

This has been approved today. Looks really quite decent. It's in Kehlam Island.

There's only one thing I dont get. There's gonna be about 220 appartment, and 6,000 sqft of office space, but... ...29 Parking spaces!?!?!?! That makes even less sense than the Bramall Lane appartments. (I'm in a very bashy mood).
